Colour Red
Origin Italy, Tuscany
District Maremma
ABV 14%

A blend of Syrah, Petit Verdot, Tannat and Mourvèdre aged in French oak. Marked by balsamic, spice and violet aromas, with dense, blackberry, blackcurrant and chocolate flavours on the palate with a subtle mint note. The silky tannins and long finish make this incredibly long on the finish. Only the fourth vintage for this wine, but each has been awarded 'Tre Bicchiere'. Drinking range: 2007 - 2030 L&S (Apr 2008)

Smudgy garnet with some brick at the rim. Complex nose of sweet black fruit and a more savoury tarry quality. They are right to be showing this now: just ready to drink. The tannins are resolved, fine but still giving shape to the smoky, savoury, charry (but not oaky) black fruit. Long and elegant. Drinking range: 2019 - 2024 Rating: 17 Julia Harding MW, www.JancisRobinson.com (May 2019)

Syrah & Petit Verdot, aged in oak for 18 months, deep yet limpid and bright ruby, rich exotic nose of hedgerow fruits with a touch of balsamic and the spice shop. Yet the palate is fine and focused with ripe elegant tannins. Because of the ripeness of the fruit, this will start drinking well in 2010 18/20 Rating: 18/20 Michael Edwards (Jul 2009)

Drink 2010-16 Petit Verdot, Syrah, Mourvèdre, Tannat Bright, deep crimson. Dense and pungent on the nose. Round and ripe. Very gentle tannin management and a flattering wine certainly. This must be the only blend of this sort made in the world, no? Very approachable. Manna from heaven for a restauranteur because of its precociousness. Very clean finish. Just a little sinewy on the finish. 14% Rating: 17 Jancis Robinson OBE MW - www.JancisRobinson.com (Jun 2009)

Castello del Terriccio

The Castello del Terriccio is beautifully positioned around twenty-five kilometres north of Bolgheri, with commanding views towards Corsica. The 60 hectares of vines enjoy wonderful exposure, overlooking the sea, benefitting from its brightness and cooling breezes. The vineyards are surrounded by 'maquis' and eucalyptus trees, which as well as protecting them, also contribute to the aromas and scents that so characterise the Terriccio wines.

Planted predominately with Cabernet Sauvignon, Sangiovese, Merlot, Petit Verdot and Syrah, the wines are made by consultant oenologist Carlo Ferrini, who has to date brought thirteen 'Tre Bicchiere' awards to the estate.

These are wines that can be approached almost immediately and yet age so well over a decade and more.

The estate continues in the hands of Vittorio Piozzo di Rosignano Rossi di Medelana who took over after the extraordinarily charming Cav. Gian Annibale Rossi di Medelana Serafini Ferri (or 'Pucci' as he was fondly known) who died at the end of 2019. Vittorio has the same team around him working in the cellars and the vineyards and the estate is going from strength to strength.
