Colheita Port is a rare beast, and undeservedly little-known. Like all Tawny Ports, it is aged in barrel until bottled, and is ready to drink upon release. The difference is that while most Tawnies are sold as 10, 20, 30 or 40 year-old blends, made to a house style, Colheitas are the product of a single vintage, and like a vintage Champagne, can have an extra edge of individuality. Noval is brilliant at Colheita, and this 2005 is wonderfully fresh and elegant, fine and long. A real treat. L&S (Jul 2020)

The first bottling of a wine, foot-trodden in lagar, after a hot, dry summer: lovely brick-red centre, orange-amber rim; gentle yet complex aromas, savoury nuttiness with suave fruit. Gloriously silky with a dusting of tannic spice still evident mid-palate, some exotic richness perfectly offset by refined freshness and verve on a long, long finish. Noval has stock of this wine which will continue to age in barrel for future colheita bottlings when the time is right. Drinking range: 2020 - 2025 Rating: 97 Decanter Magazine (Nov 2020)

Quinta do Noval

After a sometimes decadent history, and the ravages of phylloxera, Quinta do Noval was bought by Port shipper António José da Silva in 1894, and his family owned and developed Noval for nearly the next 100 years. In the 1920's they introduced that ubiquitous piece of Port marketing - the stencilled bottle - and, with the 1954 vintage, the far more useful concept of Late Bottled Vintage Port. In 1925, they planted the iconic and, astoundingly, ungrafted Nacional vineyard, the 1931 of which is regarded as one of finest Ports ever produced. The mantle of running this great estate was passed, in 1993, to AXA Millésimes who own, among others, Châteaux Pichon Longueville and Suduiraut, and Christian Seely was put in charge of the renaissance of this great vineyard.
