PALEO

2005 Rosso Le Macchiole

Grapes Cab Franc
Colour Red
Origin Italy, Tuscany
ABV 13%

Paleo 2005 (100% Cabernet Franc) offers delicious mid-term drinking and is really lovely to drink right now. Ripe and full bodied, with an uplifting acidity that keeps it so very drinkable this is as good as many a claret at twice the price. Parker reckons it is the estate's best wine in the vintage, and he is probably right. L&S (Jul 2009)

The 2005 Paleo Rosso needed time in bottle to allow the Cabernet Franc signatures to emerge, but they are now all there front and center. The freshest and brightest of Le Macchiole's 2005s, the Paleo Rosso is plump, juicy and expressive, although it naturally does not offer the finesse or nuance of the very best years. A host of mocha, espresso, torrefaction, tobacco, mint, leather and licorice meld into the expressive finish. This is a fabulous showing from the 2005. Drinking range: 2015 - 2025 Rating: 94 Antonio Galloni, www.vinous.com (Dec 2015)

Sweet tobacco, crushed flowers, licorice, mint and cedar all waft from the glass, in the 2005 Paleo Rosso. Intensely perfumed aromatics are one of the key signatures in a mid-weight, gracious wine that impresses for its feminine, utterly captivating personality. Silky tannins support a highly expressive, nuanced finish. The 2005 stands apart from the surrounding vintages for its lighter style, yet all the elements are in the right place. What a beautiful wine this is. Drinking range: 2014 - 2025 Rating: 94 Antonio Galloni, www.vinous.com (Apr 2014)

Cabernet Franc on steroids, this is a meaty, earthy treat of a wine that again, is not shy on tannins but its plummy, herbal, tobacco, creamy complexity is accentuated all the more but the freshness of the palate. Oak aplenty but with time this is going to turn into a seriously grand wine. Worth holding on to for a bit longer still. Rating: 93 The Wine Gang - www.thewinegang.com (Apr 2011)

Le Macchiole

Initially put onto the wine map by Eugenio Campolmi in 1983, the Le Macchiole estate has been run by his wife Cinzia since 2002. In the heart of Bolgheri, with 22 hectares of vineyard over much of the best soils of the region these are, along with the Sassicaia and Ornellaia's vineyards, also among the oldest and most established vines in Bolgheri. Their careful selection of grape varieties and cultivation techniques according to climate and soil has led them to concentrate on Merlot, Syrah and most importantly Cabernet Franc, a variety which can express itself so well in the hands of Le Macchiole.

All of their wines are marked by a unique and unmistakable character. Full bodied wines, and yet with clean and elegant flavours, leading to great freshness and finesse, they are incredibly sought after world-wide. The estate has been organic since 2002, and they are experimenting with biodynamics.
