CAPANNINO
2008 Castello del Terriccio

| Colour | Red |
| Origin | Italy, Tuscany |
| ABV | 14% |
Made from all of the 'declassified' wines that do not make it into Lupicaia, Castello and Tassinaia, this is very much the 'second' wine of the estate (I referred to it as the 'illegitimate brother' which failed to raise a smile...). Given a very similar treatment in the cellar, this is something of a bargain, for all of its immediate soft fruit, sweet oak and crisp tannins. All in all, an immensely attractive and elegant wine which will have tremendous appeal. L&S (May 2010)

Another winning Italian that's borrowed a few claret grapes. This Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Sangiovese blend may have been made from declassified grapes that haven't made it into the estate's more expensive wines, but it has herbal fragrance in spades with oodles of rosemary, thyme and meatiness too, all of which conjour up aromas reminiscent of a freshly-used roasting tray. Fantastic acidity, refinement and depth of flavour. Sheer class. Rating: 93 The Wine Gang - www.thewinegang.com (Dec 2010)
They regard 2008 as a very good vintage, like 2006. Sangiovese, Syrah, Merlot – the leftovers from Tassinaia, from their Castello Rhône blend and from Lupicaia, basically. Fairly light, tartish nose. High toned. Quite lush actually on the palate. You’d be quite happy with this in a restaurant but it’s far from heart-stopping. Rating: 16 Jancis Robinson OBE MW - www.JancisRobinson.com (Oct 2010)
A snappy sappy entry that opens on the mid palate into broad gleaming plum and edges of cocoa and spice. Flattering and very persuasive. Easy to like. (TC) Rating: 16.5 Tamlyn Currin - www.JancisRobinson.com (Jun 2010)
Castello del Terriccio
The Castello del Terriccio is beautifully positioned around twenty-five kilometres north of Bolgheri, with commanding views towards Corsica. The 60 hectares of vines enjoy wonderful exposure, overlooking the sea, benefitting from its brightness and cooling breezes. The vineyards are surrounded by 'maquis' and eucalyptus trees, which as well as protecting them, also contribute to the aromas and scents that so characterise the Terriccio wines.
Planted predominately with Cabernet Sauvignon, Sangiovese, Merlot, Petit Verdot and Syrah, the wines are made by consultant oenologist Carlo Ferrini, who has to date brought thirteen 'Tre Bicchiere' awards to the estate.
These are wines that can be approached almost immediately and yet age so well over a decade and more.
The estate continues in the hands of Vittorio Piozzo di Rosignano Rossi di Medelana who took over after the extraordinarily charming Cav. Gian Annibale Rossi di Medelana Serafini Ferri (or 'Pucci' as he was fondly known) who died at the end of 2019. Vittorio has the same team around him working in the cellars and the vineyards and the estate is going from strength to strength.- For full delivery details see our Delivery page.
