64% Cabernet Sauvignon, 26% Merlot, 5% Petit Verdot, 55 Cabernet Franc. "On paper it's huge" they say - IPT (Polyphenol and Tannin index) of over 80, and 13.1% alcohol. Bright and fresh, lovely rich nose and purple fruit texture and complexity. Amazing fruit - very intense. Pure, elegant, and it is powerful - a good bright intensity in which power builds evenly and slowly and fades gracefully. Rating: 92-93 L&S (Apr 2009)

The 2008 Léoville-Poyferré has long been one of the best Saint-Julien’s of the vintage. It has a vibrant, exquisitely delineated bouquet with precise black fruit, cedar and hints of liquorice that unfold seductively. The oak here is beautifully enmeshed. The palate is medium-bodied with melted tannins, a fine bead of acidity, very harmonious with pure red fruit laced with allspice, clove and bay leaf towards the finish. A brilliant wine from former winemaker Didier Cuvelier. Tasted at the Léoville-Poyferré vertical at the château with Sara Lecompte Cuvelier. Drinking range: 2021 - 2045 Rating: 94 Neal Martin, www.vinous.com (Sept 2022)
Classic, balanced, restrained, everything is knitted down and concentrated, with tannins that have grain and grip and will age for decades. Liqourice, chocolate shavings, cassis, enjoyable wine with edges of gourmet richness that become clear with time in the glass. Clearly one of the best of a vintage that was difficult for much of the season but enjoyed late season sun - something that is clear through the harvest dates, that stretched from October 6 to 18 (exactly the same dates as followed at neighbouring Léoville Las Cases). 80% new oak. Drinking range: 2021 - 2040 Rating: 95 Jane Anson, Decanter (Sept 2021)
The 2008 Léoville-Poyferré has a well-defined, quite precise and energetic bouquet with blackberry, raspberry and pencil lead aromas. This is very focused and engaging. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannin, graphite and pencil box aromas, harmonious in the mouth with a long and refined finish. What a fabulous Saint Julien from Didier Cuvelier, one that satiates the senses (and then some). Drinking range: 2018 - 2040 Rating: 94 Neal Martin, www.vinous.com (Feb 2018)
Château Léoville Poyferré
St Julien Deuxième cru 1855 When Baron Jean-Marie de Poyferré de Cères married the grand-daughter of the Marquis de Las-Cases-Beauvoir, he inherited a portion of the grand old Leoville estate. The Poyferré family owned the estate for long enough to see the granting of Second Growth status in common with the other Leovilles but, in time, oidium and financial difficulties led them to sell Leoville Poyferré. Eventually, it came in to the ownership of the Cuvelier family who own Poyferré to this day. For most of the 20th Century, compared to its namesake neighbours, Leoville Poyferré's fortunes waned as the quality of the wines fell back. Since 1980, however, considerable improvements have been made to the chais and the vineyards. The previously high proportion of Merlot has reduced, whilst the amount of Cabernet Sauvignon has risen to about 65% (Merlot is now a more Médoc-like 25%). Today, Leoville Poyferré can be seen on an equal footing with, at least, Leoville Barton. Grapes are fermented in stainless-steel, and then spend 18 to 20 months in oak (75% new). In the early years on the 20th Century, the cru bourgeois property of Château Moulin Riche was absorbed into Leoville Poyferré. The name was briefly resurrected as the name of Poyferré's second wine, although it is now produced as a wine in its own right from the vineyards of the old château. A second wine of both properties is Pavillon de Poyferré.
