Lovely freshness on the initial nose and taste, the 2008 is expansive in the mouth with a full weight and even an intriguing touch of sweetness in the mid-palate, it glides long and seamlessly and ends with freshness and purity. A complete baby for now, buy this and stash it away for at least five years to see the real depth and complexity that is undoubtedly to come. Pol reckon this is one of the great twelve vintages ever - which puts it on a list of legends, the most recent of which was the 1988 - so they rate this higher than the 2004, 2002 and so on. Pol Roger's 2008 Brut Vintage is bright and energetic, but also tightly wound and not fully expressive today. There is good energy to the orchard fruit and citrus driven flavors, not to mention plenty of acid-driven persistence. Another handsome belter of a vintage from a classy house in a classy vintage. Made with 60% Pinot Noir and 40% Chardonnay, it has breadth and depth of brioche, buttered toast and baked pastry as well as the tingling youthful freshness of lemon sherbet and orange rind. Really quite broad and ripe on the nose with mildly floral notes and a hint of putty. Really very dramatic! Even a hint of marzipan. Creamy texture with a little bruised apple acidity. Champagne Pol Roger
Champagne Pol Roger is one of the very few remaining houses still owned and run by the founding family, who remain responsible for the winemaking and selection of the cuvées each year.
Originally founded in Aÿ in 1849 by Pol Roger, the firm then moved to Épernay in 1851. The First World War had a huge impact on the firm, putting any expansion plans to rest, and Prohibition in America made exports much more difficult.
During the Second World War when the Germans occupied France, all production and buying of Champagne was controlled by the Wehrmacht.
However, the War caused Winston Churchill to become a prominent figurehead throughout the world, and his love of Pol Roger was widely known. So much so that the House created their special Cuvée Winston Churchill in 1975.
