QUINTA DA ROMANEIRA

2008 Vintage Port

Origin Portugal, Port
District Vintage Port

60% Touriga Nacional, 30%Touriga Francesa, 10%Tinto Cão – made entirely from grapes of Quinta da Romaneira – in the heart of the Douro valley. RS 97.2 g/l (vintage typically 90-110 g/l), TA 5.4 g/l, pH 3.75. Aged 20 months in used wood barrels of 640 litres or larger. Black as the ace of spades. Incredibly dense sweet ripe cassis and blackberry as well as a touch of dark dried fruit, but not really raisiny. Very pure fruit – maybe a sign of so much Touriga Nacional. Bags of spice and a lovely savoury overlay to balance the sweetness and a freshness through the core. Rich and dense and clearly vintage quality. Dry, fine, tannic finish rounded out by the sweetness. Very young and drinking it now is infanticide but it is all beautifully in balance and the sweetness kept in check by the tannins and acidity. Drinking range: 2015 - 2025 Rating: 17+ Julia Harding MW, www.JancisRobinson.com (Aug 2011)

Very deep colour. Fresh, vivid sweet blackberry and plum nose is pure and intense. The palate shows lovely fresh, pure fruit: concentrated raspberries and blackberries with nice tannic structure and sweetness. An elegant, almost Burgundian Vintage Port with good structure. Try again in 10 years. Rating: 94 Jamie Goode, www.wineanorak.com (Jun 2010)

Quinta da Romaneira

Whilst an old estate with a consequentially long history, Quinta da Romaneira only really becomes of note when, in 2004, new purchasers of the estate placed it under the management of Christian Seely and Antonio Agrellos who had worked such wonders at Quinta do Noval. Since then the vineyards have been overhauled, the best old vines have been retained in tandem with a replanting programme for the rest of the vineyard. A brand new winery has been constructed, two-thirds of it underground allowing Romaneira to have a proper cool wine cellar in the heart of the Douro valley.

85ha of vineyard, stretching some 3km along the River Douro are planted with both traditional Douro grapes and some plantings of international varieties.

Of course, this being the Douro valley, Quinta da Romaneira produce some very high quality Ports, but the forward focus of the estate is to realise the potential for table wine. In the words of Christian Seely, "our challenge has been, and remains, to find ways to vinify unfortified wines from the Douro that can take their rightful place among the great wines of the world, alongside the other great classic regions such as Bordeaux, Burgundy or the Rhone Valley."
