Tasted at GPL after Haut Batailley as usual, and it seemed not as big a jump as it can be, at least partly because Haut Batailley is so good. This is sweeter and riper, but seems if anything less 'serious' - at least until the mid-palate when the tannins build. It is just more charming - arguably even better balanced to hide its bulk. Intense flavour, the fruit staying long, long on the finish which ends with little black cherry-skin notes. At the northern Médoc general tasting it showed a complex fruit and spice, and seemed more compact and solid, so I rated it a little higher. Rating: 94+ L&S (Apr 2011)

Intense and closed off at first, full of espresso and bitter black chocolate. I have tasted this a few times over the past few years, and it is still not budging. There is plenty of loganberry and blackcurrant fruit here but it continues to be dominated by tannins, spiced turmeric, cloves and crushed rocks. Needs more time and you have to hope you catch it at the right moment - or really ensure a long carafe. Drinking range: 2025 - 2045 Rating: 95 Jane Anson, Decanter (Oct 2024)
Inky ruby colour even at 10 years old, easily as good as the 2016 and possibly even better. You can spend a lot more money on wines of this vintage and not get as much pleasure as you are getting in the glass here. Pure brilliant Pauillac, dripping with liquorice, black chocolate, rose petals, blackberries, liqourice, smoked earth, cassis, all poised with purity. Only just thinking about its drinking window, and just so generous and balanced even now, but come back in 10 years and it will only have moved on a few tiptoes - this is a slow-ageing, confident wine that will take its time. Harvest 29 September to 12 October, 75% new oak. Drinking range: 2021 - 2045 Rating: 98 Jane Anson, www.janeanson.com (Oct 2021)
Two bottles of the 2010 Grand Puy-Lacoste were opened, the first showing just a little oxidation. The second has an attractive minty bouquet, a mixture of red and black fruit laced with subtle marine/seaweed notes, a touch of graphite developing with time. The palate is medium-bodied with impressive tension and wonderful freshness right from the start. There is a sense of coiled up energy here and the finish just leaves you breathless. Tasted blind. Drinking range: 2023 - 2055 Rating: 97 Neal Martin, www.vinous.com (Apr 2020)
Château Grand Puy Lacoste
Pauillac Cinquième Cru 1855.
If there's an estate that can rival Lynch Bages for the crown of most over-performing 5th Growth, it would be Grand-Puy-Lacoste.
The "Grand Puy" is the low gravelly hill on which the vineyards sit. In 1750 a portion were sold to Pierre Ducasse and became, obviously, Château Grand Puy Ducasse while the rest, after a couple of name changes owing to inheritance by daughters, became Château Grand Puy Lacoste.
The Borie family bought into Grand Puy Lacoste in 1978 and began quite a renaissance for the property.
Just a few kilometres from the town of Pauillac, the vineyards of Chateau Grand-Puy-Lacoste total roughly 36 hectares (90 acres) with Cabernet Sauvignon making up 75% of the total plantings and the rest belonging to Merlot (20%) and Cabernet Franc (5%). Typical of the region, the vineyard consists of a deep gravel top soil on a limestone base.
Production is about 12,000 cases of wine in an average year. Fermentation takes place in temperature controlled stainless steel tanks, and then the wines are placed into oak barrels (50% new) for 18 months of aging.
