After the bright dancing movement of the Chambolle 1er Cru, the Vignes Rondes seems deeply taciturn and grumpy, just a whiff of black fruits on the nose. But the palate is a different story, generous, rounded, sweet, opulent, the tannins are all there, but this is very much the suave, gentle, round tannin of the vineyards bordering Vosne rather than the aggression of some of the wines to the south of the town. The nose does not quite have the same crystalline quality of its peers, although there is certainly a lot of brambly red fruit waiting to come out. The palate is medium-bodied with a saline touch on the entry, a vice-like grip with a dense, masculine, tannic finish. This is a little bruiser that needs several years in bottle. A spicy and distinctly earthy nose of ripe red and somber dark berry fruit slides gracefully into robust, intense and impressively rich flavors that display excellent size and weight as well as a textured mouth feel. This is also very firm but there is plenty of tannin-buffering extract and coats the palate on the driving and markedly persistent finish. Domaine J. Confuron Cotetidot
Vignerons since the seventeenth century, the Confuron family even have a strain of Pinot Noir named after them - Pinot Confuron. The domaine has several Grands Crus vineyards as well as the Premier Cru vineyard of Les Suchots, making it one of the very top domaines of the Côte de Nuits. Yves Confuron follows his family tradition of whole-bunch fermentation, giving an extra scent on the nose due to the stems of the grapes remaining intact, and picking very late. One of the strengths of Confuron Cotetidot wines is their ability to age and develop, due to the low yields and old vines that are used, causing them to be more approachable in the medium to long term.
