From vines planted in 1947 and later as a field blend (complantation) of Pinot Noir and other mutations of Pinot like Beurot, Meunier, Blanc and Gris on "volcanism-baked limestone" (Deiss), the 2012 Burlenberg Rouge – designated as "Cru d'Alsace" – shows a dark cherry color followed by a very deep and intense, still somewhat untamed nose of dark cherries and red berries, intertwined with intensely earthy and rocky flavors. The wine starts very pure, fresh, and vital on the juicy and silky textured palate; it reveals a still very young and stony/spicy taste but ends up as an expressive and firmly structured red wine full of tension, finesse and dark fruits in the long aftertaste. This hot-blooded wine shows marvelous tannins, needs to be decanted for two or more hours and should go extremely well with pigeon.
