POL ROGER

2012 Brut Champagne Pol Roger

Grapes Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, Pinot Meunier
Colour White
Origin France, Champagne
ABV 12.5%

After seven years aging in the chalk cellars of Pol Roger, this has turned an elegant pale gold with fine, persistent bubbles. You sense the warmth of the vintage on the nose where white stone-fruit intermingles with honeysuckle, spices and toast. The mouthfeel is initially racy and tight, reminiscent of the outstanding 2008 vintage, but the Pinot provides extra weight and length. This is an age-worthy Champagne with a long life ahead of it. Patience will be greatly rewarded. Drinking range: 2021 - 2035 L&S (Apr 2019)

The 2012 Brut Vintage is radiant and super-expressive from the get-go. Apricot, pastry, baked apple and buttery notes wrap around the palate effortlessly. Soft and caressing, with tons of immediacy, the 2012 is quite showy today. More importantly, it is delicious and also very easy to like. Drinking range: 2020 - 2030 Rating: 92 Antonio Galloni, www.vinous.com (Nov 2020)

Quite a rich nose and fairly rich on the palate too. An anti-Extra Brut? Nicely integrated with some lemon syllabub sensation. Not wondrously persistent, and more of a food wine than an aperitif. Drinking range: 2019 - 2025 Rating: 17 Jancis Robinson OBE MW - www.JancisRobinson.com (Apr 2019)

The Brut Vintage 2012 is a delicate pale golden colour, underpinned by a persistence of refined bubbles. Elegant and subtle, the nose is full of freshness and opens with the scent of white peach, developing into richer dried fruit, followed by enticing notes of flowers, gingerbread and mild, toasted sweet spice. Finely balanced on the palate with good weight of Pinot fruit and a complex structure and terrific length. Still young, stylish and discreet, the 2012 has great ageing potential.Winemaker's notes (Apr 2019)

Champagne Pol Roger

Champagne Pol Roger is one of the very few remaining houses still owned and run by the founding family, who remain responsible for the winemaking and selection of the cuvées each year.
Originally founded in Aÿ in 1849 by Pol Roger, the firm then moved to Épernay in 1851. The First World War had a huge impact on the firm, putting any expansion plans to rest, and Prohibition in America made exports much more difficult.
During the Second World War when the Germans occupied France, all production and buying of Champagne was controlled by the Wehrmacht.
However, the War caused Winston Churchill to become a prominent figurehead throughout the world, and his love of Pol Roger was widely known. So much so that the House created their special Cuvée Winston Churchill in 1975.
