The white-golden 2012 Schoffweg -- from a complantation of Riesling and Pinots with some Muscat and Chasselas on powdery/marly limestone soil in Bergheim, next to the Altenberg Grand Cru-- is a quite Burgundian wine grown in Alsace. Fermented and aged in used Burgundian barrels (“the wine would become too reductive in large oak”), the wine is intense and spicy on the clear, deep, concentrated though elegant and balanced nose, which indicates just a touch of new oak (15-20%) along with ripe stone fruit aromas. Rich, round, very intense and concentrated on the palate, this is a nobly expressive, very complex, and firmly structured white wine with a long and very promising mineral finish. Pale straw. Spicy aromas of white stone fruits, pear and minty herbs. Fresh and nicely structured, with saline flavors of white stone fruit and fresh citrus fruit nicely supported by noble tannins. The finish is saline, bright and long. The Schoffweg is located on the eastern side of the Altenberg grand cru, on soils characterized by very friable white calcaire. Not surprisingly, the wines show a salty, tactile quality and substantial volume. Aged in 100% barriques, of which less than 10% were new.
