Initially put onto the wine map by Eugenio Campolmi in 1983, the Le Macchiole estate has been run by his wife Cinzia since 2002. Located in Bolgheri, with 22 hectares of vineyard over much of the best soils of the region these are, along with the Sassicaia and Ornellaia's vineyards, also among the oldest and most established vines in Bolgheri. Their careful selection of grape varieties and cultivation techniques according to climate and soil has led them to concentrate on Merlot, Syrah and most importantly Cabernet Franc, a variety which can express itself so well in the hands of Le Macchiole.
All of their wines are marked by a unique and unmistakable character. Full bodied wines, and yet with clean and elegant flavours, leading to great freshness and finesse, they are incredibly sought after world-wide. The estate has been organic since 2002, and they are experimenting with biodynamics.
A wine that is evolving, and the 2012 continues the move away from the big chocolatey ‘mocha and spice’ of some of the early vintages, and towards fresher, more floral, fresh berry aromatics atop a wine that still has density and ripeness.

Shades of vanilla and whiskey cask frame the violet aromas and black cherry and raspberry fruit in this polished red. Dense, lively and balanced, with the aftertaste echoing fruit and black pepper. Has the concentration to age. Syrah. Drinking range: 2018 - 2028 Rating: 94 Bruce Sanderson, The Wine Spectator (Aug 2016)
This vintage is very lively on the nose, fresh on the palate and with marked acidity for our 100% Syrah wine. To be enjoyed as soon as it is released, but having the potential to age for about ten years, effortlessly. Winemaker's notes (Dec 2015)
The 2012 Scrio is a unique and dare I say atypical expression of Syrah. The bouquet presents big intensity with cola, balsam herb and licorice. At the back are tones of tar, Teriyaki sauce and barbecue smoke. I don't think I have ever tasted a Syrah quite like this. It shows a level of balsam intensity that I have never previously encountered. The bouquet glows with Tuscan sunshine. Drinking range: 2016 - 2028 Rating: 93-93 Monica Larner, The Wine Advocate (www.robertparker.com) (Oct 2015)
The 2012 Scrio is decidedly lithe in this vintage, with gorgeous aromatics and terrific overall balance. Rose petal, white pepper, mint and red-fleshed stone fruit unfold in a mid-weight, gracious Scrio built on understated finesse. Drinking range: 2018 - 2032 Rating: 92 Antonio Galloni, www.vinous.com (Oct 2015)
A decadent syrah with loads of meat, dark fruits and hints of vanilla. Full-bodied, round and chewy yet leading to a long, long finish of fruit that turns to black pepper. Drink or hold. Rating: 96-96 James Suckling, www.jamessuckling.com (Aug 2015)
