CHÂTEAUNEUF DU PAPE

2013 Les Sables de la Crau Domaine Jean Royer

Grapes Grenache, Syrah
Colour Red
Origin France, Rhône
District Southern Rhône
Village Châteauneuf du Pape
ABV 15.5%

Bright ruby-red. Sexy, mineral-tinged raspberry and floral pastille aromas show outstanding clarity and pick up a pungent suggestion of garrigue with air. Spicy, penetrating and energetic on the palate, offering juicy red berry, cherry liqueur and lavender flavors that deepen and spread out on the back half. The mineral and floral notes resonate emphatically on the persistent finish, which is firmed by sneaky, fine-grained tannins. Drinking range: 2019 - 2027 Rating: 94 Josh Raynolds, www.vinousmedia.com (Apr 2016)

The 2013 Châteauneuf du Pape les Sables de la Crau is a stunner in the vintage. Ultra-pure, elegant, sweetly fruited and a sexy as they come, it delivers loads of strawberry, rose petal, framboise and spice on the nose. My only complaint is that it’s slightly straightforward, but it delivers more pleasure than most in this vintage and just begs to be drunk! Enjoy this beauty anytime over the coming 7-8 years. Drinking range: 2015 - 2023 Rating: 91 Jeb Dunnuck - www.robertparker.com (Oct 2015)

Domaine Jean Royer

Jean-Marie Royer inherited his vines in 1985 and set about improving the grape varietal mix and the vinification from then. Since more than half of the domaine is in unclassified ('Vin de Table') or 'Côtes du Rhône, he has developed a marque 'Le Petit Roy' sold as Vin de Table' for everything that does not make it into the Châteauneuf cuvées. The Petit Roy has always been a big hit in the shops ever since first joining our list.

His Châteauneufs are just gorgeous and offer refreshingly fantastic value for money. He has undoubtedly been much helped his close friend, the late star oenologist Philippe Cambié, who he went to school with and also played rugby with for many years. Cambié was more famous for a full-on rather extracted style, but Jean-Marie imposed his own, fresher, brighter style on all his wines which are crunchy and well-defined, helping cement these elegant expressions of Grenache as some of the finest from Châteauneuf.
