PALEO

2013 Rosso Le Macchiole

Grapes Cab Franc
Colour Red
Origin Italy, Tuscany
District Bolgheri
ABV 15%

Gorgeously aromatic, blueberry, damson and cassis, touch of mocha/chocolate. Palate is sleek and ripe, bright acidity, rich dark fruit core, blueberry, cassis and plum, then complexing oak, dark chocolate and coffee notes. Supremely elegant, so graceful the power goes unnoticed, but slowly builds to the finish. Tannins supple and fresh. This is Luca's first vintage 'on his own'. L&S (Apr 2017)

The 2013 Paleo Rosso is 100% Cabernet Franc that saw an extended maceration in concrete tanks followed by 20 months in 70% new French oak. It’s a total blockbuster and offers up sensational notes of black currants, smoked tobacco, chocolaty oak, and dried flowers. Concentrated, full-bodied, and structured, with building tannin and a great finish, this singular, exotic, quintessential Cabernet Franc needs 2-3 years of bottle age and will shine for 10-15+. Bravo. Drinking range: 2018 - 2035 Rating: 96 Jeb Dunnuck, www.jebdunnuck.com (Mar 2018)

Our Cabernet Franc’s key feature is freshness, which completes the suite of fresh yet sweet aromas typical of Cabernet Franc, in addition to marked and elegant spicy notes. Linear and juicy on the palate. Ernesto Gentili says: “The nose is rich and complex from the very start: spices, sweet tobacco, fresh soil, cocoa, eucalyptus, redcurrant, the aromas are intertwined with one another. The palate is dense, velvety, elegantly shaped, definitely alcoholic but also very long and spicy on the finish. Probably the best Paleo ever”. Winemaker's notes (Dec 2016)

The 2013 Paleo Rosso is super-expressive from start to finish. Soaring Cabernet Franc aromatics make a strong first impression. Mocha, espresso, plum, chocolate and savory herbs give the 2013 tons of aromatic intrigue, but there is plenty of textural depth to back things up. A deep, sensual wine with striking fruit purity, the 2013 Paleo Rosso will drink well for a number of years. Best of all, the 2013 is a terrific expression of Franc on the Tuscan coast in a late-ripening year. 2020-2033. Rating: 96 Antonio Galloni, www.vinous.com (Dec 2016)

Le Macchiole

Initially put onto the wine map by Eugenio Campolmi in 1983, the Le Macchiole estate has been run by his wife Cinzia since 2002. In the heart of Bolgheri, with 22 hectares of vineyard over much of the best soils of the region these are, along with the Sassicaia and Ornellaia's vineyards, also among the oldest and most established vines in Bolgheri. Their careful selection of grape varieties and cultivation techniques according to climate and soil has led them to concentrate on Merlot, Syrah and most importantly Cabernet Franc, a variety which can express itself so well in the hands of Le Macchiole.

All of their wines are marked by a unique and unmistakable character. Full bodied wines, and yet with clean and elegant flavours, leading to great freshness and finesse, they are incredibly sought after world-wide. The estate has been organic since 2002, and they are experimenting with biodynamics.
