A blend of 100% Syrah aged 20 months in 75% new oak, the inky colored 2013 Scrio gives up a stunning bouquet of blackberries, smoked meats, graphite, and licorice. Deep, layered, gorgeously concentrated, ripe and sexy, yet with a core of ripe tannin and a great finish, it needs a year or two but will keep for another 10-15 years. This is another singular effort from Luca Rettondini that readers should do their best to taste. Drinking range: 2018 - 2033 Rating: 96 Jeb Dunnuck, www.jebdunnuck.com (Mar 2018)

This is meaty, exhibiting iron, blackberry, cracked pepper and sanguine aromas and flavors shaded by spicy oak notes. Powerful and dense, this could still benefit from aging but would be approachable with something like a juicy, grilled steak. Syrah. Drinking range: 2019 - 2029 Rating: 94 Bruce Sanderson, The Wine Spectator (May 2017)

This version of our Scrio wine is of the highest quality too. A 100% Syrah wine, which offers a more fruity and less spicy nose as compared with other vintages, and the typical Bolgherese fresh and balsamic notes. Full and deep on the palate, with an assertive and lively entry and medium-bodied finish with silky tannins.Winemaker's notes (Dec 2016)

Le Macchiole's 2013 Scrio is a deep, dense wine built on a core of serious fruit. Dark, powerful and inviting, the 2013 possesses striking nuance throughout, especially in the expression of fruit. Creamy, silky tannins add to an impression of generosity. It will be interesting to see if more varietal aromatics develop in bottle. Today, the Scrio is a wine decidedly built on primary notes. Drinking range: 2018 - 2028 Rating: 96 Antonio Galloni, www.vinous.com (Dec 2016)

The 2013 Scrio is an opulent, generous and engaging wine. It reveals an all-Syrah personality with ample layers of dark fruit, blackberry, spice, cured meat, leather and bacon fat. Its integration is absolutely seamless. Scrio is dark and impenetrable in terms of appearance and presentation. The bouquet and the mouthfeel are long and luscious. You can count the length of the finish in many, many long seconds. Only 5,000 bottles are made. In terms of its aging potential, this Tuscan Syrah has the inner energy to last two decades or more. Drinking range: 2017 - 2035 Rating: 96 Monica Larner, The Wine Advocate (www.robertparker.com) (Oct 2016)

Initially put onto the wine map by Eugenio Campolmi in 1983, the Le Macchiole estate has been run by his wife Cinzia since 2002. In the heart of Bolgheri, with 22 hectares of vineyard over much of the best soils of the region these are, along with the Sassicaia and Ornellaia's vineyards, also among the oldest and most established vines in Bolgheri. Their careful selection of grape varieties and cultivation techniques according to climate and soil has led them to concentrate on Merlot, Syrah and most importantly Cabernet Franc, a variety which can express itself so well in the hands of Le Macchiole.

All of their wines are marked by a unique and unmistakable character. Full bodied wines, and yet with clean and elegant flavours, leading to great freshness and finesse, they are incredibly sought after world-wide. The estate has been organic since 2002, and they are experimenting with biodynamics.
