Of the two Zinfandels that Michael makes, this is the brighter, more restrained style that impressed us enormously when we tasted together amongst the vines of Lodi. Elegant, fresh and supple with the focus on lively fruit and clarity of expression – quite unlike traditional, heavy, jammy California Zins. There's a red-cherry and raspberry purity to the fruit, a spicy lift and a savoury roast-meat note to add depth. This is my 3rd year making wine from Bob Schulenburg’s vineyard. These vines are over 60 years old and produce small Zinfandel clusters with small berry size. For this vintage I fermented a little over a third of the wine with native yeast. I then put the wine in 2nd year barrels that had been used for Pinot Noir and aged it for 16 months.Winemaker's notes(Aug 2016)

Fresh faced and gently spoken Michael is a natural talent, crafting subtle, elegant wines from some prize plots in Lodi. His day job is with the brilliant Michael David winery, but the real magic happens with his own small scale project where he selects plots and picks early as he strives for freshness in the juice and some lift in the wines.
Incredible natural ability and a fresh, open-minded attitude mean his wines are some of the very best we have tasted with impressive tight lines for wines from this part of the world.
