Lovely suave feel. Super gloss to the well ripened fruit. Impressive power and grandeur. There is great energy to this, but it is not just playful there's a surprisingly serious feel - really impressive. 90% Merlot, 10% Cabernet Franc. Rating: 92 L&S (Mar 2015)

*Case price: Mix any 12 bottles of wine or 6 bottles of Champagne, Spirits or Fortified to get the 'case price' for each bottle.

The 2014 Les Cruzelles has a simple bouquet, tertiary in style, woodland scents intermixed and perhaps dominating the fruit underneath. The palate is medium-bodied with dry tannin, chewy in the mouth at first although it musters more detail towards the lightly spiced, quite saline finish. Like other Pomerol wines it just needs another three or four years in the glass. Tasted blind at the annual Southwold tasting. Drinking range: 2021 - 2035 Rating: 92 Neal Martin, vinous.com (Mar 2018)

Mocha, plums, black cherries, spices and new leather are all wrapped together in the 2014 Les Cruzelles. Deep, pliant wine, the 2014 Les Cruzelles possesses fabulous depth and pure resonance. Exotic spiced notes add nuance on the super-expressive finish. The 2014 is 90% Merlot and only 10% Cabernet Franc, although the flavor and tannin profile suggests there is much more Franc. I very much like the sense of energy here. Rating: 89-92 Antonio Galloni, www.vinous.com (May 2015)

The Château Les Cruzelles 2014 is a blend of 90% Merlot and 10% Cabernet Franc picked from 24 to 29 September and 17 to 21 October and aged in 50% new oak. The nose is ripe and generous with wild strawberry and dark plum aromas, the oak nicely integrated. The palate is medium-bodied with supple and fine tannin. It is not a complex Lalande-de-Pomerol but is (as usual) extremely well balanced with a fine degree of tension and finesse on the broody finish. Give this a couple of years in bottle and it should give several years of pleasure, probably more. Drinking range: 2017 - 2027 Rating: 89-91 Neal Martin, www.robertparker.com (May 2015)

A mix of black fruits floral and fragrant there is lots of charm. The start of the palate has complexity fresh and focussed but in the mid ripe damsons enrich supple and fleshy underpinned by ripe tannins. Fresher towards the back the finish is long spicy with a lovely purity of flavour. Drinking range: 2020 - 2030 Rating: 90-93 Derek Smedley MW, www.dereksmedleymw.co.uk (Apr 2015)

A wine that's very marked by its comparatively small percentage of Cabernet Franc, this is always one of the Gironde's greatest bargains. Grassy, elegant and leafy with dark berry and fennel notes that build on the palate, complemented by stylish, aromatic oak. Typically impressive winemaking. (One of Tim's Top 10 Value Reds.) Drinking range: 2018 - 2026 Rating: 93 Tim Atkin MW, www.timatkin.com (Apr 2015)

A fine and silky red with blackberries, walnuts and spices. Medium to full body, fine tannins and juicy finish. Rating: 87-88 James Suckling, www.jamessuckling.com (Mar 2015)

Denis Durantou

Among the brightest stars of the exalted Pomerol appellation is Denis Durantou at Château l’Eglise-Clinet. Little more than a kilometre to the north, near enough to see one from t’other, across the Barbanne stream in Lalande-de-Pomerol is Château les Cruzelles, also owned by Denis. The 10ha of vines boast the highest proportion of Cabernet Franc in the area – 40% - with the rest being the more usual Merlot.

Aside from Château les Cruzelles proper Denis also produces here La Chenade, a Lalande-de-Pomerol cuvee he made with Cruzelles’ grapes even before he bought the estate in 2000. Denis also owns a small vineyard of 35 year old Merlot vines at Saint Etienne de Lisse at the eastern end of St Emilion that goes under the name of Saintayme.

And, a little further south-east, across the boundary in the Côtes de Castillon is Château Montlandrie that Denis bought in 2009. Much renovation has taken place at the 12ha vineyard that includes, almost uniquely for the Right Bank, new plantings of Cabernet Sauvignon that now make up 15% of the vineyard alongside the usual 65% Merlot and 20% Cabernet Franc.

POMEROL

Ever popular with its plump plummy Merlot enriched fruit, there just isn't enough Pomerol to go round. Fortunately, we have saved a case for you...We may have thrown in a few Lalande-de-Pomerol too - it's not cheating, the best Lalande's carry the classic Pomerol stamp and can offer rather better value for money.
