2015 5ème Cru Classé Macau
|Classification||5ème Cru Classé|
Curiously green compared with many of its peers, more punch on the start, but less interest and finesse. Decent weight, quite intense and some length, but not much fun. Rating: 87-88 L&S (Apr 2016)

Impressive richness and clarity of red and dark berries. Lightly spiced-pastry aromas, too. The palate has a very crisp, polished and groomed tannin texture, as well as super fresh flavors that carry long. Great wine. Drinking range: 2022 - Rating: 95 James Suckling, www.jamessuckling.com (Feb 2018)
The 2015 Cantemerle is a blend of 59% Cabernet Sauvignon, 27% Merlot, 8% Cabernet Franc and 6% Petit Verdot. It offers plenty of blackberry and raspberry fruit on the nose, not the best defined that I encountered among the Haut-Médocs, but with plenty of "stuffing." The palate is medium-bodied with supple red and black fruit on the entry matched with a fine thread of acidity. There is a pleasing crescendo in the mouth driven by that Merlot content and it finishes with some swagger. This is a very fine Cantemerle exuding joie-de-vivre that I can see doling out plenty of drinking pleasure over the next decade and beyond. Tasted thrice with consistent notes. Drinking range: 2019 - 2033 Rating: 90-92 Neal Martin, www.vinous.com (Apr 2016)
An appealing character on the nose of this barrel sample, with lightly roasted blackcurrant fruits, a little touch of black cherry, and some grilled almond and dark chocolate too. The palate is cool, defined, very fresh, quite elegant, showing a little oaky wrapping, with gentle blackcurrant fruit in the middle, holding up nicely in the middleweight texture of the wine. Ripe, with grained tannins at the finish. Very pretty, charming, with good poise and promise. Rating: 16.5-17.5/20 Chris Kissack, www.thewinedoctor.com (Apr 2016)
Haut-Médoc Cinquième cru 1855 The long history of Château Cantemerle begins at least as far back as the 12th Century when it was a fortification. Wine production got under way seriously under the watch of the Villeneuve family who bought Cantemerle in 1579 and finally sold up in 1892. During that time Château Cantemerle famously scraped in to the 1855 classification as an apparent last minute addition after some frantic lobbying by Caroline de Villeneuve-Durfort. Théophile-Jean Dubos bought Cantemerle in 1892 and had some initial success, but the 20th Century saw a familiar period of decline and his descendents sold up nearly a hundred years later in 1981 to the Groupe SMABTP who's recent investments have put Château Cantemerle back on its feet. Château Cantemerle lies in Macau, to the south of the Margaux appellation. There are 87ha under vine, planted to 50% Cabernet Sauvignon, 40% Merlot, 5% Cabernet Franc and 5% Petit Verdot. Grapes are hand harvested. The Grand Vin spends 12 months in wood, of which 50% is new. There is a second wine - Les Allées de Cantemerle.
