CHÂTEAUNEUF DU PAPE

2015 Tradition Domaine Jean Royer

Grapes Grenache, Syrah
Colour Red
Origin France, Rhône
District Southern Rhône
Village Châteauneuf du Pape
ABV 15.5%

Deep red. A perfumed bouquet evokes fresh red berries, peppery spices and smoky minerals, plus a hint of lavender that builds in the glass. Vibrant raspberry and floral pastille flavors deepen and expand with air while maintaining vivacity. Silky tannins meld smoothly with the juicy fruit on the long, penetrating, racy finish, which repeats the floral note. Rating: 91-93 Josh Raynolds, www.vinousmedia.com (Mar 2017)

Starting with the barrel sample and mostly Grenache, blended with 5% each of Cinsault and Syrah, the 2015 Châteauneuf du Pape should be a smoking value. Full-bodied, hedonistic and even voluptuous, this beauty gives up terrific notes of strawberries, kirsch, Provençal herbs and lots of sandy/loamy soils aromas and flavors. It should drink nicely right out of the gate, yet also evolve nicely. Rating: 90-93 Jeb Dunnuck - www.robertparker.com (Oct 2016)

La Crau, Les Grandes Serres. pH 3.50, TA 3.5 g/l. 5% Cinsault, 90% Grenache, 5% Syrah. Partial whole bunch. Vinified in cement and stainless steel. Aged in demi-muid, used barrels and stainless steel. Tasted blind. Mid ruby. Not much nose. Then lots of genuine concentrated fruit. Very big and round. Lots of life here with no obvious forcing mechanism though for the moment the tannins are a bit dominant. Drinking range: 2024 - 2033 Rating: 16.5+ Jancis Robinson OBE MW - www.JancisRobinson.com (Oct 2016)

Domaine Jean Royer

Jean-Marie Royer inherited his vines in 1985 and set about improving the grape varietal mix and the vinification from then. Since more than half of the domaine is in unclassified ('Vin de Table') or 'Côtes du Rhône, he has developed a marque 'Le Petit Roy' sold as Vin de Table' for everything that does not make it into the Châteauneuf cuvées. The Petit Roy has always been a big hit in the shops ever since first joining our list.

His Châteauneufs are just gorgeous and offer refreshingly fantastic value for money. He has undoubtedly been much helped his close friend, the late star oenologist Philippe Cambié, who he went to school with and also played rugby with for many years. Cambié was more famous for a full-on rather extracted style, but Jean-Marie imposed his own, fresher, brighter style on all his wines which are crunchy and well-defined, helping cement these elegant expressions of Grenache as some of the finest from Châteauneuf.
