Enticing nose with a rich, weight of fruit. Warm red berries and some darker leafier elements create very charming aromatics. This follows to the palate on the attack, but then the pure feel builds intensity quickly. Delicious fine grained grip envelopes beautifully the darker, sleeker fruit core. There is energy and push here that is totally captivating. A savoury line and firmer dark currents and Mediterranean undergrowth notes add yet another dimension. This is pure and so clean-cut and it whistles along with great charm, but the breadth and many layers of contrasting fruit, herbs and gentle structure give real cause for thought. Fascinating and deeply satisfying wine from the this great estate on the high slopes of Etna. This wine comes from their oldest bush vines of Nerello Mascalese (90%) and Nerello Cappuccio. Organically grown, hand picked and raised for 24 months in the most beautiful egg shaped wooden barrels we have ever seen. Special stuff with the real ‘Spirito’ of this intriguing volcanic terroir. Drinking range: 2019 - L&S (Jan 2019)

Light ruby with bricky rim. That inviting aroma of sweet and sour wild red berries. Much better balance between the fruit and the tannins than in the Nero di Sei. A huge step up from the non-Contrada wines just tasted. The tannins are still dry but the fruit and the texture are much more in harmony. Drinking range: 2019 - 2025 Rating: 16.5 Julia Harding MW, www.JancisRobinson.com (May 2019)

Palmento Costanzo

A property of 14 hectares in Contrada Santo Spirito, Passopisciaro, on the northern slopes of Etna. 10 hectares are planted with vines on walled terraces on volcanic rocks between 600-800 metres altitude. The Costanzos came here in 2011 - they are from Catania - and meticulously restored the palmento (the word for the olive millstone which gave the farm its name). The vineyards are planted employing the ‘gobelet' method and farmed organically. The 2017’s are certified organic. This is an amazing new project which has been given all the investment and attention it needed to make great wines from the outset.
