Planted in 1872 and 1880 un-grafted so pre-phylloxera...as it has goblet pruning Thibault could see 100-150 scars revealing the fact it is very old. Thibault bought this from an 80 year old man, who told him the vines were old when he was young. They have huge roots. There are 3 vineyards. “I wanted to make a cuvee as they used to produce in the C19th - 50% whole bunch and foulage with feet. It was 6 weeks in the vat. Only put in barrel in March. Just 3 barrels from 0.6 hectares. No new planting where the vines are lost..they bury the arm and make the new vine from this. “The question is..what sort of Gamay.” This has spicy opulent fruit. It is wild and dense with a quantity of matter and a rich depth to the tannins. very spicy. It is compact. Just 3 barrels and bottled in magnums. This is rather a decadent wine! Domaine Thibault Liger-Belair, Beaujolais
Domaine Thibault Liger-Belair have purchased eight prime parcels of vines in Moulin-a-Vent. The grapes were sold off in 2008 because they felt it took more than just one year working with the vines to get them to perform. 'My objective was not to buy a domaine, but to buy vineyards in different spots. What is very important for me', says Liger-Belair,'is to showcase the difference between each type of granite and each exposure.' Two refrigerated trucks a day delivered fruit to be pressed in Nuits-Saint-Georges (all destemmed in the 2009 vintage and only gently pumped over to 'infuse', never punched down) and raised in used barriques.
