PALEO

2015 Rosso Le Macchiole

EN PRIMEUR

2015 was clearly a warm vintage and it is incredible what the team have done here to retail such class and definition in the wine. The nose sings Cabernet Franc and the depth is hugely impressive. Sweet morello cherry juice and fragrant plum pulp make up a rich sleek core of fruit with ginger spice and fresh green herbs adding another dimension. The grip is beautifully managed, softly granular tannins give length and add a complexity. There is lift too so you are left with a feel of finesse and powerful drive. Clever stuff in a warm year, a dynamic and powerful Paleo.L&S (Mar 2019)

This red is sleek and concentrated, featuring black currant, black cherry, licorice, tobacco and leather flavors. Balanced and juicy, with a long, mineral-tinged aftertaste. The firm structure will allow this to age. Best from 2021 through 2035.— Drinking range: 2021 - 2035 Rating: 94 Bruce Sanderson, The Wine Spectator (May 2019)

The 2015 Paleo Rosso is powerful, dense and super-concentrated, with all of the richness of the vintage very much on display. The 2015 is going to need time in bottle to develop the full breadth of its aromatics. Today, it is dense, powerful and very closed. Even so, there is terrific persistence and follow through. All the 2015 needs is time to unwind. Drinking range: 2022 - 2035 Rating: 95 Antonio Galloni, www.vinous.com (Mar 2019)

The Cabernet Franc for the Paleo Rosso wine were harvested between September 18 and 25. Full ripeness was achieved later as compared with the Merlot, but the grapes were perfectly mature and healthy. These grapes underwent the same sorting process, whereas ¾ of the grapes were vinified in concrete vats and the remaining part in steel. Again, in late October, as soon as the malolactic fermentation was completed, the wine was left to age in barriques. Winemaker's notes (Feb 2019)

There are so much essence-like fruits on the nose of this Bolgheri Rosso, from blackberry perfume and dark-cherry compote to fresher elements of rosemary, lavender, hot stones and citrus. Full body with generous fruit, but the firm and beautifully woven tannin backbone keeps the palate fine and elegant. Very long on the finish. Drink in 2024. Rating: 97 James Suckling, www.jamessuckling.com (Sept 2018)

Initially put onto the wine map by Eugenio Campolmi in 1983, the Le Macchiole estate has been run by his wife Cinzia since 2002. In the heart of Bolgheri, with 22 hectares of vineyard over much of the best soils of the region these are, along with the Sassicaia and Ornellaia's vineyards, also among the oldest and most established vines in Bolgheri. Their careful selection of grape varieties and cultivation techniques according to climate and soil has led them to concentrate on Merlot, Syrah and most importantly Cabernet Franc, a variety which can express itself so well in the hands of Le Macchiole.

All of their wines are marked by a unique and unmistakable character. Full bodied wines, and yet with clean and elegant flavours, leading to great freshness and finesse, they are incredibly sought after world-wide. The estate has been organic since 2002, and they are experimenting with biodynamics.
