Le Macchiole | The Eagerly Awaited 2015 Releases

Le Macchiole is one of the jewels in the crown of Bolgheri, which is itself among the most exciting regions in the world for fine wine lovers. The coastal strip of Tuscany had been devoid of quality wine production, until the first commercial release of Sassicaia in 1971 proved that foreign varieties liked it here much more than the native ones, and opened the door for experimental plantings which led to the birth of the whole category of ‘Super-Tuscans’.

Le Macchiole has been at the forefront of this pioneering movement since its foundation by the late, great Eugenio Campolmi in 1983. Lea & Sandeman has been sole importer of the estate's wines since the outset. Innovation and a tireless pursuit of quality have always been hallmarks of the estate, whether that be planting at a vine density hitherto rare in Italy, or bottling the region's very first single-varietal Cabernet Franc in 2001. Eugenio's wife Cinzia continues his legacy by never losing sight of this approach. 'Our working philosophy is based on our ongoing need to question ourselves, experiment and learn new things, which is what has allowed us, in the past few years, to produce increasingly focused and elegant wines.’

'Simply put, 2015 is a tremendous vintage for Bolgheri' Antonio Galloni

That emphasis on focus and elegance is one of the reasons the estate has produced such brilliant wines in 2015 - a vintage that, in July at least, flirted with excess heat. As Antonio Galloni says, 'the finest 2015s are sumptuous and racy, but they are not at all overblown or flabby. These are wines born with extraordinary balance and harmony, with soft curves, fully ripe tannins, racy fruit and tons of sheer allure.' All of Le Macchiole's 2015 releases are undoubtedly among the finest produced in Bolgheri from this superlative vintage. If scores are your thing then the wines have the numbers to prove it but take it from us that these wines have the potential to be among the best ever produced by this great estate.

‘...there’s a subtleness to the top 2015s that make them irresistible’ James Suckling

This generous feel extends to the palate - where all four varieties are in total harmony. The overall feel is of softness and plumpness but there is a delicious line of acidity adding pep and drive. And in the mouth a lithe feel of polished tannin builds and keeps the flow serious, Well judged red fruit melds seamlessly with some darker flesh - some pepper spiciness and a note of dried tobacco. Richly textured and intensely flavoured this has superb impact and delivers instant joy. What a wine! This polished effort shows the class of Le Macchiole and is something to enjoy as soon as it lands, or hold for 2-3 years, supreme value from the team here.

The core is intense and loaded with firmish black fruit-flesh and a savoury sinew. Dark and brooding for now with seasoning twists of pepper and some lovely leafy, crunchy notes. Serious stuff and with great presence. Well framed by impressive fine-grained tannins that point to a good, mid-to-long term future for this well-proportioned, pure Merlot.L&S(Mar 2019)

The nose sings Cabernet Franc and the depth is hugely impressive. Sweet morello cherry juice and fragrant plum pulp make up a rich sleek core of fruit with ginger spice and fresh green herbs adding another dimension. The grip is beautifully managed, softly granular tannins give length and add a complexity. There is lift too so you are left with a feel of finesse and powerful drive. Clever stuff in a warm year, a dynamic and powerful Paleo.L&S(Mar 2019)
