Farmed organically at this beautiful spot above the Straits of Messina this Nerello Mascale (70%) and Nocera (30%) blend is a really exciting new listing for us. Bright, with delicate spice and black pepper this is brilliantly aromatic - on the red fruit spectrum. Raspberries and zippy early-season strawberries form a high-toned fruit core that seems to cruise across your palate on a high plain. Lifted and elegant but with that exquisitely balanced fruit. This is Etna style and feel but at a really appetising price from just a bit further up the coastline. L&S (Apr 2017)

Made predominantly from 70% Nerello Mascalese, the high-quality grape behind most of Etna's top reds, this is an attractive cheaper alternative to the more expensive Etna wines. Tangy red cherry and hedgerow berry fruit with black pepper and a volcanic mineral character (although it's not near Etna). Le Casematte
There can't be too many wine estates named after WWII gun emplacements, but the three concrete casemattes among the vines designed to protect the Strait of Messina have indeed inspired the name of Le Casematte - "a place where grapevines have supplanted death" they say on their web-site, probably quite profound. Le Casematte was founded in 2008 by former footballer Andrea Barzagli and accountant Gianfranco Sabbatino. The vines are in the north of Sicily, with vineyards rising to 500m above sea-level, and northerly exposures helping to mitigate the southern sun-shine. They are committed to organic farming.
