QUINTA DO NOVAL

2015

Origin Portugal, Port
District Vintage Port
ABV 20%

A bit like Dirk Niepoort - Christian Seely who runs Noval, is happy to play by his own rules and he too has declared 2015. Noval is a different proposition to the other Shippers in the Douro - as they source all their fruit from their own vines all situated around their farm up above Pinhao in the highly prized Cima Corgo sub-region. So with careful selection - just 9% of the 2015 fruit was deemed worthy of inclusion in the final bottling - Christian often feels he can make extraordinary high quality port that truly reflects the house style. This is in short supply but is a beautifully constructed Vintage Port. Concentrated and wonderfully intense - this is a 2015 that should age sublimely. L&S (Jun 2017)

The 2015 Vintage Port from Noval was picked from 2 September, stopping for the mid-September rain and restarting on 24 September. It has a tightly wound bouquet with black cherries, eau-de-vie, touches of sage and pencil shavings, light menthol scents emerging with time. The palate is medium-bodied with a slightly saline entry, fine depth, but not the most powerful Noval in recent years; black pepper becomes more prominent towards the finish. This Port is sleek and seductive, though probably five or six years away from being ready as there is still a bit of toughness on the finish. Tasted at the Quinta do Noval tasting at Spring restaurant in London. Drinking range: 2026 - 2065 Rating: 94 Neal Martin, www.vinous.com (Nov 2022)

Enigmatic nose, seemingly a bit light on first impressions, but it develops a ripe, heady aroma in the glass and then a classic scent of succulent, soft ripe cassis fruit, well defined and backed by fine-grained, linear tannins. Beautifully poised. 2,600 cases were produced. Drinking range: 2028 - 2045 Rating: 95 Decanter Magazine (Oct 2017)

This is very polished in feel, with long, caressing, fine-grained structure that allows plum eau-de-vie, boysenberry puree and blackberry cobbler notes to play out at their leisure. Light anise and ganache hints accent the finish while the fruit blazes through. Rock ‘em, sock ‘em Port. Best from 2030 through 2045. 2,600 cases made.— Drinking range: 2030 - 2045 Rating: 95 James Molesworth, The Wine Spectator (Oct 2017)

Quinta do Noval

After a sometimes decadent history, and the ravages of phylloxera, Quinta do Noval was bought by Port shipper António José da Silva in 1894, and his family owned and developed Noval for nearly the next 100 years. In the 1920's they introduced that ubiquitous piece of Port marketing - the stencilled bottle - and, with the 1954 vintage, the far more useful concept of Late Bottled Vintage Port. In 1925, they planted the iconic and, astoundingly, ungrafted Nacional vineyard, the 1931 of which is regarded as one of finest Ports ever produced. The mantle of running this great estate was passed, in 1993, to AXA Millésimes who own, among others, Châteaux Pichon Longueville and Suduiraut, and Christian Seely was put in charge of the renaissance of this great vineyard.
