BANDOL

2016 Cuvée Classique Domaine Tempier

Grapes Mourvèdre
Colour Red
Origin France, Provence
Sub-district Bandol
ABV 14.5%

The 2016 Cuvée Classique has a pronounced whiff of garrigue, spice and the signature Bandol farm yard scent that you come to expect from Tempier's wines. Dark fruit, wood, leather and forest floor flavours paint a complex picture on the palate. There is volume and weight as you would expect from a warm vintage but this is all harnessed by good acidity and bold tannins. Drinking range: 2021 - 2030 L&S (Sept 2019)

A big, earthy, sage and black pepper-stashed 2016 from one of Bandol’s top producers.Jane MacQuitty, The Times (Feb 2020)

Tempier's 2016 Bandol Cuvee Classique was the only red I had a chance to taste from this historic domaine. A Mourvèdre-dominated wine (70% to 75%, depending on the vintage) blended from several vineyards and aged in foudres, it shows some leathery scents alongside vibrant purple fruit. In the mouth, it's medium to full-bodied, marked by almost painful acids, while the tannins are ripe and supple. I'd suggest decanting it a couple of hours ahead of serving if you decide to broach a bottle in the near term. Drinking range: 2020 - 2030 Rating: 88+ Joe Czerwinski, www.robertparker.com (May 2019)

Domaine Tempier

Domaine Tempier is an old family estate, owned by the Peyrauds since Lucien Peyraud married Lucie Tempier in 1936. The family was largely instrumental in getting the appellation of Bandol established in 1941. The reds are the quintessential expression of Mourvèdre, grown on terraced vineyards on steep hills around the 'plan du Castellet'.

Traditional vinification using indigenous yeasts, the wines are aged in a variety of different sized oak (25 to 75hl) for between 18 and 20 months. These are wines which are capable of long ageing, but even young they have a finesse of fruit and earthy flavour, coupled with fine-grained tannins, which lift them above the generality of Provençal reds.
