CHÂTEAUNEUF DU PAPE

2016 Hommage à Jacques Perrin Château de Beaucastel

EN PRIMEUR

This delivers a torrent of lively raspberry pâte de fruit and plum reduction notes, infused liberally with anise, fruitcake and black tea nuances. Ripe and dense, yet lively, defined and fresh in feel, coursing over graphite and leather accents on the well-structured finish. Drinking range: 2021 - 2045 Rating: 97 James Molesworth, The Wine Spectator (Jan 2020)

Deep vivid magenta. A highly complex bouquet displays candied black and blue fruits, incense and musky earth aromas; violet, licorice and Indian spice notes build in the glass. Sweet and expansive on the palate, offering deeply concentrated, mineral-laced blueberry, cherry compote, fruitcake and floral pastille flavors that are given spicy lift and bite by a late peppery flourish. Tightens up slowly on a strikingly long, chewy, floral-driven finish framed by dusty, steadily building tannins. Drinking range: 2028 - 2040 Rating: 98 Josh Raynolds, www.vinousmedia.com (Dec 2019)

A more savory, moody, strong expression. Deeply rich nose with minerals, flowers, wild herbs, tar, toasted spices and pepper. The dark berries have a smoky edge. Minerally edge, too, thanks to the 60 per cent mourvèdre. The palate has glossy, ripe and super-fine tannins in sheets. Deep-set, dark plums and blueberries in the finish. Noble tannins. Age-worthy. Rating: 100 James Suckling, www.jamessuckling.com (Aug 2018)

The flagship is the 2016 Châteauneuf-du-Pape Hommage A Jacques Perrin, 75% Mourvèdre and 10% Syrah, 10% Grenache, and the rest Counoise, brought up all in foudre. Blueberries, Peking duck, new saddle leather, black cherries, scorched earth, and an incredible sense of minerality all flow to a massive, concentrated, pure, perfectly balanced 2016 that is a prime example of the old saying, “an iron fist in a velvet glove.” It's a heavenly, perfect wine that's going to live for 30-50 years. Rating: 100 Jeb Dunnuck, www.jebdunnuck.com (Aug 2018)

I tasted the base—from the estate's oldest Mourvèdre—of what will become the 2016 Chateauneuf du Pape Hommage a Jacques Perrin. Expectations were high, and they were fully met by this wine, which packs in incredible intensity, rich tannins and a finish that doesn't quit. This is a wine that will certainly live for many decades. Drinking range: 2020 - 2050 Rating: 98-100 Joe Czerwinski, www.robertparker.com (Oct 2017)

A tasting of the Courrieux vineyard, a single parcel of Mourvèdre planted in 1909 that always makes up around 70% of the blend. It's a wine that makes you inhale deeply. It has a wonderful, regal, stunning nose of violets, blueberries, and blackcurrant almost. It's seamless on the palate, with some camphor, menthol and rosemary notes to the fruit. There's sublime freshness, and the tannins are full and dense but very ripe. A mouth-filling, mouth coating and very intense wine, with a saline finish. Potentially worthy of a perfect score. Drinking range: 2027 - 2050 Rating: 99 Decanter Magazine (Oct 2017)

The Château de Beaucastel dates as far back as the 16th Century, when it was an agricultural estate. The first vines were planted at the time of the French Revolution and when pyhlloxera hit the region in the 19th Century, the Château was sold to Pierre Tramier, who rebuilt the vineyards before passing on the estate to his son in law, Pierre Perrin, a scientist. Under Pierre’s stewardship the vineyards were considerably expanded, with the Château being passed on to his son Jacques and then staying in the Perrin family ever since.

The vineyard consists of 100 hectares, of which three quarters fall under the Châteauneuf du Pape appellation. It produces the full 13 grapes allowed in the Châteauneuf appellation, all under biodynamic farming. Blending is key and minimal oak is used during the maturation process, meaning the Château de Beaucastel has an unique style, every year.

In exceptional years, the Famille Perrin release a special cuvee in honour of their father Jacques Perrin. This cuvée (‘Hommage a Jacques Perrin’) is made predominantly from very old Mourvèdre vines, yielding tiny amounts of intensely ripe, concentrated fruit. This is truly an exceptional wine, with those tasting it never forgetting its intense aromas of black cherry, cassis, spice, leather and game.
