2016 '466' Palmento Costanzo

This is from parcel 466 of the Palmento Costanzo estate and is matured in wooden eggs for 24 months prior to bottling. Sleek and concentrated dark fleshy fruit, herbs, aniseed, cherry and wild strawberry. In the mouth the wine is intense, sleek, with a concentrated mineral undertow, super fine tannins, rich acid, aromatic, berry fruit. A wine of superb balance and breeding, wonderful intensity, yet oh so poised, with real drive on the finish. Drinking range: 2019 - 2025 L&S (Oct 2019)

Limpid cherry-red. Nutty, clove notes of oak are much better integrated into this than the Nero di Sei, with an underlying ripeness of red-cherry fruit. Firm, fine tannins that are resolving nicely, with a perfumed red-cherry palate. Long, with the oak spice integral to the finish. A very pure-fruited and vibrant expression of Etna, singing with bright blueberries, black raspberries and tulips. From the celebrated Contrada Santo Spirito, where the Palmento Costanzo winery is located, this is the estate's top-shelf wine. If you run your fingers across the front label, you get a sandpaper-like tactile response from the gray portion of the label design. That's because actual volcanic ash is embossed onto the paper label of the 2016 Etna Rosso Contrada Santo Spirito (closed with a wax seal). Dark berry fruit and dried cherry segue to spice and tar. This wine has a heavy element to the bouquet that reminds me of graham crackers or bread crust. It's a little strange but otherwise delivers the power of Etna. A property of 14 hectares in Contrada Santo Spirito, Passopisciaro, on the northern slopes of Etna. 10 hectares are planted with vines on walled terraces on volcanic rocks between 600-800 metres altitude. The Costanzos came here in 2011 - they are from Catania - and meticulously restored the palmento (the word for the olive millstone which gave the farm its name). The vineyards are planted employing the ‘gobelet' method and farmed organically. The 2017’s are certified organic. This is an amazing new project which has been given all the investment and attention it needed to make great wines from the outset.
