FELTON ROAD

2016 Calvert Pinot Noir

Grapes Pinot Noir
Colour Red
Origin New Zealand, South Island
ABV 13.5%

The 2016 Calvert Pinot Noir has a little more definition on the nose than the 2016, featuring a mixture of red and black fruit tinged with black truffle and smoke. The palate is medium-bodied with red berry fruit, tomato vine, a touch of white pepper and an elegant finish that perhaps just misses the harmony and persistence of the previous vintage. Nevertheless, this is still very pretty and succinct Pinot Noir that should age well in bottle if so desired. Drinking range: 2018 - 2028 Rating: 92 Neal Martin, www.vinous.com (Nov 2018)

Fleshy cherry and blackberry notes have an appealing velvety texture, with pops of black pepper, dried lavender and sage, lingering on the finish. Drink now through 2028. Rating: 93 MaryAnn Worobiec, The Wine Spectator (Aug 2018)

As with the Cornish Point (qv) there’s a scent of roses, but here there are drifts of exotic incense too. The palate has an alluring roundness and fleshiness, but behind the scenes the generosity is controlled by silky tannins and delicate, tight acidity. Rating: 93 The Wine Gang - www.thewinegang.com (Mar 2018)

Made with 25% whole clusters, the 2016 Calvert Pinot Noir is floral and herbal up front, with distinct rose petal and thyme aromas. Red berries take charge on the palate, although there's a resinous herbal note from start to finish. This medium-bodied wine is supple enough to be approachable now, but it has the concentration to age through 2025. Drinking range: 2018 - 2025 Rating: 91 Joe Czerwinski, www.robertparker.com (Feb 2018)

Felton Road

Felton Road and Rippon are undoubtedly the two leading vineyards in Central Otago, both making Pinots that are finely textured with fresh fruit flavours, rather than the 'fruit bombs' that so many others produce. Felton Road has been totally organic and biodynamic across their three Bannockburn vineyards since 2005. They have been certified by Demeter since 2009. After that there are more differences than similarities.
While Rippon, at Wanaka is on schist, Felton Road in Banockburn is on clay and calcareous loess. It is also very much in the rain shadow of the Main Divide. Irrigation is used at Rippon to help establish young vines, but dry farming is possible once the vines get their roots down, while at Felton Road permanent irrigation is required for the entire vineyard.
