The 2016 Etna Rosso Mofete is incredibly pretty with its display of dried flowers, pine shavings, strawberries and nuances of sweet spice. This is silky and pliant in feel with dark red fruits, as saline-minerals and fine tannins slowly settle in toward the close. The Mofete leans more toward the savory spectrum through the finale, with hints of sage and licorice lingering long. A blend of 80% Nerello Mascalese and 20% Nerello Cappuccio. Drinking range: 2021 - 2025 Rating: 89 Eric Guido, www.vinous.com (Jun 2021)

Ripe maraschino cherry and fresh leather, with a nutty, stony edge. Wet stones and maraschino cherry, with moderate, sandy tannins – more in the Pinot Nero style than the Nebbiolo-like expression. Drinking range: 2020 - 2024 Rating: 16 Tim Jackson MW, www.jancisrobinson.com (Apr 2020)

This delightful Etna red not only delivers loads of ripe flavors, but manages to be fresh and agile at the same time. Think granite, roasted chestnuts, scorched earth, dried strawberries and glazed red cherries. Full-bodied and quite structured with polished yet persistent tannins and grainy texture. Drink now. Rating: 92 James Suckling, www.jamessuckling.com (Nov 2019)

Palmento Costanzo

A property of 14 hectares in Contrada Santo Spirito, Passopisciaro, on the northern slopes of Etna. 10 hectares are planted with vines on walled terraces on volcanic rocks between 600-800 metres altitude. The Costanzos came here in 2011 - they are from Catania - and meticulously restored the palmento (the word for the olive millstone which gave the farm its name). The vineyards are planted employing the ‘gobelet' method and farmed organically. The 2017’s are certified organic. This is an amazing new project which has been given all the investment and attention it needed to make great wines from the outset.
