|Origin||Italy, Emilia Romagna|
The other part of the world where the concept of reserve is protected by wine laws is Italy. As with reserva in Spain, Italy’s riserva describes a winemaking recipe rather than being a synonym for quality, but some of Italy’s very finest wines – including classics such as Giacomo Conterno Monfortino Barolo Riserva from Piedmont and Biondi Santi Brunello di Montalcino Riserva from Tuscany – do fit the legal bill. Whenever I’ve had the chance to taste these magical wines, questions about the precise amount of time they’ve spent in an oak barrel have seemed a little pedantic – and I feel the same about Rafaella Bissoni’s gorgeous Sangiovese Riserva. Made from the same variety, sangiovese, it’s aged for 18 months in oak, and 12 in bottle before it’s released – a riserva that really does feel special. David Williams, The Observer (Sep 2020)

Raffaella Bissoni has always dreamt of raising the profile of Emilia Romagna's important grape varieties; Sangiovese and Albana. Her aim was to produce fine wines through careful work in the vineyards, being patient and respectful of nature and its cycles. She wanted to bottle not only wine, but also her passion and her love for things done properly. And so in 1988 she founded the Bissoni winery. Nestled on the beautiful hillside of Casticciano, a natural terrace overlooking the sea in the medieval town of Bertinoro. She has always worked organically and treats the farm as a complete ecosystem with vines sharing soil with wildly growing cover-crops. For Rafaella this natural balance is key. Even with the cover crops she wants the land to select what should grow, rather than choosing and manipulating the soil buy planting beans or other well-known solutions. From the 2016 vintage Rafaella has been certified organic although nothing has actually changed in her work. Pure and fresh wines from this true artisan producer. Today, she is living the dream and remains faithful to her values - organically certified these are beautifully crafted wines coming from her 5 hectares of pristine vineyards.
