BOLGHERI ROSSO

2017 Le Macchiole

EN PRIMEUR

The 2017 Bolgheri Rosso is a rich, explosive wine that embodies all of the natural richness and opulence of the year. Black cherry, bittersweet chocolate, plum, mocha, licorice, spice, leather and menthol burst from the glass in this exuberant, flamboyant red. Not a shy wine by any means, the 2017 possesses tons of intensity and volume in all of its dimensions. This is an especially heady wine, even by Bolgheri standards, and that is saying a lot! And yet all the elements are so well balanced. Drinking range: 2020 - 2025 Rating: 91 L&S (Mar 2020)

The nose here is hugely inviting. A broad sweeping aroma of soft red flesh and some leafy notes too. Yet so 'together' - so complete and so enticing. This generous feel extends to the palate - where all four varieties are in total harmony. The overall feel is of softness and plumpness but there is a delicious line of acidity adding pep and drive. And in the mouth a lithe feel of polished tannin builds and keeps the flow serious. Well judged red fruit melds seamlessly with some darker flesh - some pepper spiciness and a note of dried tobacco. Richly textured and intensely flavoured this has superb impact and delivers instant joy. What a wine! This polished effort shows the class of Le Macchiole and is something to enjoy as soon as it lands, or hold for 2-3 years, supreme value from the team here. (Merlot 40%, Cabernet Franc 30%, Cabernet Sauvignon 15%, Syrah 15%) L&S (Feb 2019)

Lots of bright cherry and raspberry fruit. Juicy finish with crunchy tannins and mellow creamy notes. A crowd pleaser with style. Drinking range: 2020 - 2026 Rating: 17 Walter Speller, www.jancisrobinson.com (Apr 2020)

Bright and succulent, this red offers cherry, blueberry and blackberry flavors, accented by bell pepper, iron and tobacco notes. Turns lean on the finish, with lightly astringent tannins. Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Syrah. Best from 2021 through 2032. The family-owned Le Macchiole, run by Cinzia Merli and her two sons, farms its 64 acres of estate vineyards organically. This bottling, also a Bordeaux blend with Syrah, sources grapes from various plots around Bolgheri, showcasing the region's many soil types. Drinking range: 2021 - 2032 Rating: 90 Bruce Sanderson, The Wine Spectator (Apr 2019)

As every year, harvesting exactly at the right ripeness stage of each grape variety is the challenge that we have to face in order to make an extremely easy-drinking Bolgheri Rosso. The first Merlot grapes gave a fresh starting point and an assertive tannic texture, whereas the less dense yet very complex Syrah grapes gave spicy black pepper and red fruit notes and, above all, good acidity. The Cabernet Franc and Sauvignon grapes enjoyed a longer ripening cycle, which contributed to the wine’s body and complexity on the finish. Winemaker's notes (Mar 2019)

Initially put onto the wine map by Eugenio Campolmi in 1983, the Le Macchiole estate has been run by his wife Cinzia since 2002. In the heart of Bolgheri, with 22 hectares of vineyard over much of the best soils of the region these are, along with the Sassicaia and Ornellaia's vineyards, also among the oldest and most established vines in Bolgheri. Their careful selection of grape varieties and cultivation techniques according to climate and soil has led them to concentrate on Merlot, Syrah and most importantly Cabernet Franc, a variety which can express itself so well in the hands of Le Macchiole.

All of their wines are marked by a unique and unmistakable character. Full bodied wines, and yet with clean and elegant flavours, leading to great freshness and finesse, they are incredibly sought after world-wide. The estate has been organic since 2002, and they are experimenting with biodynamics.
