BRUNELLO DI MONTALCINO

2017 Podere Giodo di Carlo Ferrini

EN PRIMEUR

A full-bodied Brunello with lots of plums and cherries, as well as orange-peel character. It’s creamy and round-textured. Soft and chewy tannins. Shows the warmth and ripeness of the 2017 vintage. Drink after 2023. Rating: 96 James Suckling, www.jamessuckling.com (Aug 2021)

* This is a pre-shipment/primeur offer. All orders are accepted under the TERMS of this offer which differ from the terms of the rest of the site.

After the amazing last few years that Giodo has enjoyed, the 2017 vintage doesn’t quite have the same levels of succulence but this is still an exceptional wine. Clear smoke on the first nose, aromatically rich, with touches of rosemary, saffron and white pepper alongside red cherry and raspberry fruit. Hugely concentrated, the tannins take a grip on your palate and tug the fruit back as it moves through the palate, keeping your focus engaged. 30% lower yield than normal. This will be released in September but not available for immediate delivery because it is finishing up its two years in bottle ageing (after three years in barrel). Carlo Ferrini winemaker. Drinking range: 2023 - 2040 Rating: 95 Jane Anson, www.janeanson.com (Sept 2021)

This has a distinctive and aromatic nose with herbal aromas alongside red cherries and black bramble fruit. The palate is so juicy with such life and an almost sweet touch to the acidity. It tastes youthful and brimming with fervent energy - alive in the best possible way. Tannins are well integrated and the texture overall is smooth and refined. 30 months in 25hl and 40hl traditional Slavonian oak casks, followed by 18 months ageing in bottle. Drinking range: 2023 - 2040 Rating: 95 Georgie Hindle - Decanter (Jul 2021)

Rating: 98 Anne Krebiehl MW, Vinous.com (Sept 2021)

Lustrous mid ruby. Complex, deep red-fruit nose with hints of what looks like oak, although apparently there isn't any. Very sleek. Great concentration of suave, juicy, red fruit with a layer of fine tannins on the palate. A very skilful interpretation of this challenging year. Drinking range: 2022 - 2030 Rating: 17 Walter Speller, www.jancisrobinson.com (Feb 2022)

Famed oenologist Carlo Ferrini who's stellar career has seen him consulting at some of the greatest estates in Italy has finally put down some roots of his own. Putting his full effort and expertise, his heart and soul - into his own winery in Montalcino. Named after his parents 'Giovanna and Donatello' - Giodo is small, just 5.5 Hectares - but perfectly formed.

Carlo spent many years looking for the best spot for his own venture. Just south of the town of Montalcino he found Giodo. South-east facing, gentle slopes, perfectly exposed to the morning and early afternoon sun, where through rigorous selection he has planted 15 different clones of Sangiovese, all selected for their quality of fruit and their low yields. All perfectly suited to this ideal site.

With limited production and incredible provenance, it is no surprise that these wines are in huge demand and heavily oversubscribed.

We are delighted to be the UK's importer for this very special estate - not just because of our respect for the pedigree of Carlo Ferrini - but because they are fantastic wines.

The maestro has finally put his name on the bottle and these wines are full of class and pedigree.
