The 2017 du Tertre is a very pretty wine. Succulent red cherry, dried flowers, mint, blood orange and spice notes meld together in a pliant, mid-weight Margaux that will drink well right out of the gate. This is an especially elegant vintage for a property that often leans towards a wilder style. The 2017 is one of the prettiest recent Tertres I can remember tasting. Drinking range: 2020 - 2032 Rating: 92 Antonio Galloni, www.vinous.com (Mar 2020)

The 2017 du Tertre was bottled at the of end May 2019, estate director Alexandre van Beek mentioning that they are aiming for earlier bottlings. It has a perfumed bouquet with pressed rose petals and brown spices infusing the red berry fruit, perhaps a little more savory than its Margaux peers. The palate is medium-bodied with a splash of balsamic on the entry. Moderate depth, slightly coarse tannins with that balsamic note evident towards the finish. What is missing is some depth and flesh, though it may develop with time. Drinking range: 2021 - 2034 Rating: 88 Neal Martin, www.vinous.com (Feb 2020)

The 2017 du Tertre was picked from 14 September to 2 October, matured in around 45% new oak. The blend has been 85% completed. It has a very pleasant bouquet, pure blackberry, briary and more iris than violet aromas. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannin, a fine line of acidity, very harmonious and for want of a better expression, appears to be a Margaux that wears its heart on its sleeve. This will be worth seeking out once in bottle. Tasted on three occasions. Drinking range: 2021 - 2036 Rating: 89-91 Neal Martin, www.vinous.com (May 2018)

75% Cabernet Sauvignon, 10% Merlot, 10% Cabernet Franc, 5% Petit Verdot. Deep crimson with black core. Lifted, but not very expressive at first, then a definite graphite note and an inviting dusty quality. Savoury dark fruit on the palate but juicy and fresh at heart. Fine tannins already surprisingly silky. Just enough depth of fruit on the mid palate to balance the supple tannins. Touch of oak sweetness and toast on the finish. More immediate charm than the Ch Giscours tasted alongside, more friendly. Drinking range: 2025 - 2037 Rating: 16.5 Julia Harding MW, www.JancisRobinson.com (Apr 2018)

Château du Tertre

Margaux Cinquième cru 1855

Château du Tertre is an estate whose star has risen quite considerably in recent years and offers a good bet to those seeking a decent Margaux without breaking the bank.

Château du Tertre lies just north of the village of Arsac in the south-east corner of the Margaux commune. The name refers to the hillock on which the vineyards stand and unusually for the Haut-Médoc the vineyards are in a single block around the château. Du Tertre has a long history dating back at least to the 12th Century when it was owned by the Seigneurie d'Arsac, and featured for a while in the extensive holdings of the Ségur family. A Ségur connection of a sort was re-established in 1961 when Philippe Gasqueton, who already owned Calon-Ségur in Saint Estèphe, bought the run-down du Tertre and set about restoring the château and vineyards. After his death in 1995, du Tertre was sold to Eric and Louise Albada Jelgersma who own the neighbouring Château Giscours.

The 50ha of vines are planted to 40% Cabernet Sauvignon, 35% Merlot, 20% Cabernet Franc and 5% Petit Verdot. The wine spends 18 months in wood, of which 50% is new.
