(from a .68 ha parcel). As is often the case chez Drouhin, this possesses the spiciest nose in the range with its aromas of red and dark currant, Asian tea, sandalwood and plenty of floral influence. There is very outstanding depth on the focused and sleekly muscular broad-shouldered flavors that exude a sense of focused power as well as ample minerality before culminating in a strikingly long and well-balanced finish. This is both silky and refined and the natural class of Musigny is very much on parade. Like the Amoureuses, this is a bona fide ‘wow’ wine that should richly reward extended keeping. This is a very complex and assertive wine that is so enticingly floral, spicy and fragrant that you can smell earthy notes, as well as sweetly smoky nuances with a full compliment of ripe red cherries and blood-orange zest. The palate has a very plush, very long, deep and powerful style with rich red cherries, framed in effortlessly long, plush and seamlessly ripe tannins. So long, velvety and approachable. The 2017 Musigny Grand Cru unfurls in the glass with captivating aromas of dried flowers, rose petal, violets and raspberries that mingle with deeper bass notes of espresso roast and raw cocoa. On the palate, the wine is full-bodied, satiny and extremely elegant, with terrific depth, concentration and amplitude, framed by rich but powdery tannins and concluding with a beautifully fragrant finish. The 2017 Musigny Grand Cru was picked on September 8 and includes 40% whole clusters. It has a very intense bouquet of exquisitely defined brambly red fruit, crushed stone and pressed rose petal aromas. With continued aeration there are hints of vervain tea and bay leaf. The palate is medium-bodied with filigreed tannin. There is a little more density here compared to the Les Amoureuses. White pepper and light sage and saline notes emerge toward the classy finish. Domaine Joseph Drouhin

Joseph Drouhin, founded in 1880 and still family owned, are one of the most well-respected names in Burgundy, especially through their flagship wine, the iconic Clos des Mouches.

A huge part of the Drouhin production comes from their own domaine fruit (78 hectares), and much of the rest comes from contracts such as that with the Marquis de Laguiche, who shook hands with the grandfather of the current generation, agreeing to let him manage his vineyards which included an important part of Le Montrachet; this collaboration endures. Today, the fourth generation is at the helm

Small refinements continue to be made here. The presses have been changed - a reversion to basket pressing for the reds, and for whites the presses are open - along with a number of other growers they are following the trend to think that slight oxidation of the juice before fermentation is not a problem and may add complexity as well as avoiding later problems of premature oxidation in bottle.

For the reds there has been the introduction of selective whole-bunch fermentation in the Côte de Nuits wines. The house style remains one that 'emphasises the natural elegance of great Burgundies' as they describe it. The domaine is all cultivated with an organic and biodynamic approach.
