2017 Vintage Port

Origin Portugal, Port
District Vintage Port
ABV 19.5%

Immediately on the nose this charms your senses. After tasting a long run of 2017s - this has a soft and aromatic allure that you do not find elsewhere. On the nose you are transported to the warm steep slopes of the Douro. Wafting notes of wild-flowers, dried blossom and scrubby herbs. You feel the heat, the dryness. Clever. On the palate there is a lovely soft, open-knit fruit flesh. Those herbs again and a gorgeous sleek feel. We loved the 2016 release but this is a step up - similar elegant fruit profile - but this 2017 has just an extra element of power. Slightly broader shoulders. You hardly notice but this is more serious, more powerful and more intense. A pretty, deeply satisfying Port that will give huge pleasure going forward - its charm may make tasters underestimate its ageing potential. L&S (May 2019)

Deepest purple crimson. Very ripe like liqueur black cherry. The high percentage of Touriga Nacional seems to be showing in a strong bergamot aroma but also floral and wild herbs. Complex aromas already. Immense depth and richness of fruit undergirded by firm dry, multi-layered tannins. Both sweet and mouth-watering on the long finish. Generous and surprisingly approachable. Drinking range: 2025 - 2050 Rating: 17 Julia Harding MW, www.JancisRobinson.com (Jun 2019)

Co-owned by Christian Seely, Managing Director of Quinta do Noval and located just upstream on the north back of the Douro; lifted and aromatic on the nose with a lovely herbal, green tea character on the nose; very pure black cherry fruit, immediately appealing with lovely definition, not as big as some but makes up for this with this immediacy and beauty. One for the medium term. **** Rating: 17 Richard Mayson, www.richardmayson.com  (May 2019)

Dense and layered with very ripe fruit and beautiful blueberry and blackberry character. Medium sweet. Driven and finely textured. Beautiful wine all around. Rating: 94 James Suckling, www.jamessuckling.com (May 2019)

Quinta da Romaneira

Whilst an old estate with a consequentially long history, Quinta da Romaneira only really becomes of note when, in 2004, new purchasers of the estate placed it under the management of Christian Seely and Antonio Agrellos who had worked such wonders at Quinta do Noval. Since then the vineyards have been overhauled, the best old vines have been retained in tandem with a replanting programme for the rest of the vineyard. A brand new winery has been constructed, two-thirds of it underground allowing Romaneira to have a proper cool wine cellar in the heart of the Douro valley.

85ha of vineyard, stretching some 3km along the River Douro are planted with both traditional Douro grapes and some plantings of international varieties.

Of course, this being the Douro valley, Quinta da Romaneira produce some very high quality Ports, but the forward focus of the estate is to realise the potential for table wine. In the words of Christian Seely, "our challenge has been, and remains, to find ways to vinify unfortified wines from the Douro that can take their rightful place among the great wines of the world, alongside the other great classic regions such as Bordeaux, Burgundy or the Rhone Valley."
