RATHFINNY

2017 Rosé Brut

Grapes Pinot Noir, Pinot Meunier
Colour White
Origin United Kingdom, English Sparkling Wine
Classification English Sparkling Wine
ABV 12.5%

Wallop! In a good way! This hits you out of the glass with real heady and intense aromas. Its a complex and rich perfume hit. A feel of strawberries, steeped gently in warm spirit. There's a savoury whiff of roses and geranium notes too. Very intense. Deep salmony pink in the glass. A luxurious feel and broad palate stretches across the mouth - and then that subtle line of acidity reels you back in. High-toned floral elements grab your attention and lift that intensity. This is an impressive rosé for sure. 63% Pinot Noir, 19% Chardonnay, 18% Pinot Meunier. This spends 24 months bottle ageing in the Rathfinny cellars. Limited release of just 12000 bottles. L&S (May 2020)

Star Buy. The new vintage of Rathfinny’s sparkling rosé is ravishing. Medium-bright cerise with redcurrant and pear fruit, ripe but fresh, with a white pepper twist.Susy Atkins, The Telegraph (Jul 2020)

This is the one wine in the quartet which I have not quite got my head around. It is a 2017, so this is an obvious change of pace from the three exuberant 2016s and while this is a small but good vintage at Rathfinny, there is a lot of fruit here and I suspect that some might even confuse it for a Kir Royale if they were given its blind. That is if you make your Kir from Crème de Rosehip! Rich, full, cherry skin and hedgerow notes abound and while this is not an elegant wine I could certainly squirrel away a few glasses with a spicy lamb kebab or beef in black bean sauce! That’s right, this is a foody number and it is brave enough and opinionated enough to launch itself at whatever dish you fancy and I venture it will come up smiling, too, such is the character and persistence of this strident rosé.Matthew Jukes www.matthewjukes.com (May 2020)

Rathfinny

In 2018, the Sussex estate of Rathfinny launched its first two sparkling wines from an ambitious project started in 2010. Following a successful career in the city, owner Mark Driver and his wife Sarah, set about building from scratch a world-beating wine estate. They have not flinched from this ambition and have patiently waited 8 years to release there first sparklers.

Located on chalk rich soils in a perfect basin near the sea in Sussex's South Downs it is an ideal spot. With a great team put in place and a long-term vision all is auguring well for the realisation of the Drivers' dream.

In 2019 we have seen the second releases and there is a huge amount to admire. Poised, intense and seriously drinkable wines from this very convincing set up.

A superb new edition to our burgeoning selection of English greats and located in the South Downs of Sussex between Brighton and Eastbourne, Rathfinny sets its sights confidently from the start. Right now there are 185 acres of vines but a further 215 acres are to be planted by 2021.
