This is a triumph! Unmistakeably Cabernet Sauvignon on the nose - but with added charm and super inviting, gently floral and then the beautifully polished generous core of fruit - all in the Cabernet Spectrum, but just generous enough and just sleek enough to be dangerously charming. Crunch of cassis berry and lovely spice - whiff of ripe damson juice - all so well put together and so engaging there is nothing out of place. This is simply superb, a superior expression of this classic grape. Sophisticated, elevated and yet enthralling and accessible. Drinking range: 2021 - 2026 L&S (Feb 2021)

Grapes from Bottelary, Helderberg and Polkadraai. Matured for 22 months in 80% new barrique and 20% in foudre. Cranberry and cassis, cigar box and pencil shavings on the nose. The palate is medium bodied but not overly-refined with fresh acidity and fine tannins. Just about pitch-perfect. Rating: 96 www.winemag.co.za (Oct 2020)
Damascene
Damascene is a seriously exciting new find for us in South Africa. Their maiden vintage here was 2018 and we were blown away by the results. 2019, their second vintage was sold out on release, read the press release HERE.
The highly acclaimed Jean Smit, previously winemaker at Boekenhoutskloof, has teamed up with David Curl, former owner of Bordeaux’s Chateau Gaby.
Their goal is to explore all across the South African winelands in search of exceptional sites. Sites that deliver an important moment of insight, and hence the name of the project. A Damascene moment of clarity, where we can all understand the greatness of these small, prized plots.
The vineyards are old and well established but small, so each of these brilliant wines is only released in very small quantities. We urge you to catch them while you can.
