Peloro Rosso is such a gorgeous expression of the local Etna varieties from this beautiful spot on the Sicillian coast facing the toe of Italy. 70% Nerello Mascalese and 30% Nocera aged in 1st and 2nd use French Oak Tonneaux for 6 months.
The Peloro headland points like an arrowhead across the straits of Messina to Italy - as depicted by the triangular label. The fruit here is delightfully dark-toned with a touch of sinew to the fruit, black cherry, blackberry juice and an earthy note but delivered with delicacy and sleek charm. Beautiful wild herb notes add further complexity. Above all the feel is bright and aromatic with a lovely, crisp delivery, well balanced with good length and persistence. L&S (Mar 2021)

A 15,000-bottle release, the Le Casematte 2018 Rosso Peloro is a blend of 70% Nerello Mascalese and 30% Nocera with a lifted and punchy style that pops with intensity from the glass. The wine is medium-weight in texture. However, it feels more robust and long-lasting, especially thanks to the lively acidity delivered on the polished finish. This would be a great partner to a Sicilian timballo, or baked pasta cake stuffed with cheese, eggplant and tomatoes. The wine's acidity would do well against that type of regional specialty. There can't be too many wine estates named after WWII gun emplacements, but the three concrete casemattes among the vines designed to protect the Strait of Messina have indeed inspired the name of Le Casematte - "a place where grapevines have supplanted death" they say on their web-site, probably quite profound. Le Casematte was founded in 2008 by former footballer Andrea Barzagli and accountant Gianfranco Sabbatino. The vines are in the north of Sicily, with vineyards rising to 500m above sea-level, and northerly exposures helping to mitigate the southern sun-shine. They are committed to organic farming.
