Denser than the Kratos with great concentration. An almost fleshy nose, loaded with peach and apple fruit. Beautiful bright lift on the palate keeps the energy levels high. Richly fruity, then a mineral line, fresh citrus zip and touch of chalkiness fine grip. Such great length. A wonderful mouthful of textured fruit. This is a complex, charming wine with great personality. L&S (Jan 2020)

Luigi Maffini's vineyards are a 1.5 hour drive south of Naples, inland from the famous Greek ruins of Paestum in the Cilento National Park. This Fiano is something special - it's a sunnier, wild herb, exotic version of the better known Fiano di Avellino. Enticing toasted apricot and exotic spice aromas give way to a silky rich texture balanced by fresh acidity and bright citrus flavours. Sea salt and mineral notes provide a long, lingering finish. Organic. Drinking range: 2021 - 2025 Rating: 93 Susan Hulme MW - Decanter (Jan 2021)

The 2018 Fiano Pietraincatenata shows a more tropical side of Fiano, displaying young mango and papaya, before giving way to crushed stones, with savory herbs and a hint of dusty florals. It floods the palate with silky richness, carrying notes of ripe apple with a savory, herbal twang, as this seems to hover across the senses with a more spicy floral mix and a gentle tug of acid. The finish is medium in length, as pretty yellow florals and stone fruits fade, leaving a staining of salty minerals in their wake. Drinking range: 2022 - 2028 Rating: 91 Eric Guido, www.vinous.com (May 2020)

Subtle, subdued lemon nose with hints of oat. Lemon and mandarin fruit palate. Viscous and long and ends on dry lemon-sherbet notes. Proper Fiano, but different from the Avellino version. Drinking range: 2020 - 2024 Rating: 17 Walter Speller, www.jancisrobinson.com (Apr 2020)

Luigi Maffini

Luigi Maffini's vineyards are on the coast of Campania, south of Naples, across the bay from Positano, and planted with the local grapes, Fiano for the whites and Aglianico for the reds. While the family's first vines were planted in the seventies, the real beginning of this winery dates from 1996.

Luigi and his wife Raffaella are both graduates of Naples university in agricultural sciences. Luigi specialised in viticulture and winemaking. Ten years elapsed between our first tasting of his wines and getting Luigi 'on board', but he has now been with L&S since 2009.

Raffaella and Luigi run the vineyards organically, and share the land with their two children and three dogs, as well as hares, foxes, hedgehogs, hawks and wild boar, with which they are happy to live in peace. There are now two vineyard sites, at Castellabate and Giungano, so some of the wines are DOC Cilento and some DOC Paestum.
