The same vinification, and the same 25% new wood, so the difference between this and the VR 'classique' is the site and the age of the vines. The domaine has taken back some parcels which were 'en métayage', and they have decided to make a new cuvée of village Vosne from this exceptional site, which is planted north-south because of the shape of the plot, and so running laterally across just below their winery and in front of their neighbour Anne Gros. Planted sixty-five year ago, but some vines have been replaced as necessary. The concentration of the vintage and the old vines is here too, but this is so much more refreshing and liquid, flowing, the young vine component giving red fruit and energy. An even spicier nose flashes a dark aromatic profile that gives way to supple, round and easy-going flavors that possess very good mid-palate density, all wrapped in a dusty, firm and youthfully austere finish that exhibits just a bit more energy. A new cuvée for the Mugneret family debuts with the 2018 Vosne-Romanée La Colombière, a bottling from one of the stonier lieux-dits that cluster around the village, where the domaine owns 86 ares planted in the 1960s over which they now have full control after the ending of an old sharecropping agreement. Wafting from the glass with an incipiently complex bouquet of raspberries, Asian spices, orange rind, black tea and incense, the wine is medium to full-bodied, supple and enveloping, with velvety tannins, terrific concentration and a long, precise finish. This is a touch finer-boned and even more elegant than the regular Vosne-Romanée this year, and it will evidently be worth a special effort to track down. The 2018 Vosne-Romanée La Colombière is the debut release since the Mugneret family decided to separate their parcel of vines that lies just behind the maison, à la Comte du Liger-Belair. It offers scents of raspberry preserve and wild strawberry scents, and the 25% new oak is neatly integrated. The medium-bodied palate features succulent, pliant tannins matched with a fine bead of acidity and the purity synonymous with this address. A lovely debut. Domaine Georges Mugneret-Gibourg

Domaine Mugneret-Gibourg was founded in 1933 on the marriage of Jeanne Gibourg and André Mugneret. Holdings then consisted of Bourgogne, village Nuits, village Vosne and Echezeaux. Their son Georges, an opthalmologist by day, added to the vineyards, but his acquisitions (Nuits 1ers Crus Vignes Rondes and Chaignots, Chambolle 1er Cru Feusselottes, and Grands Crus Clos Vougeot and Ruchottes Chambertin) were kept separate as Domaine Georges Mugneret.

On Georges' death in 1988, his widow Jacqueline and daughter Marie-Christine took over. Marie-Andrée, the younger daughter joined them a little later having completed her studies as an oenologist. In 2009 Jacqueline retired and the two domaine names were put together to become Domaine Georges Mugneret-Gibourg, ending the prior confusion of labels.

The sisters have proved more than safe hands as far as the winemaking is concerned, and these are top-flight Burgundies with that elusive balance of enough concentration allied with delicacy of expression and the capability to age well. All the vineyard management has been brought in-house (the domaine previously relied on two métayeurs for part of the vineyard) and the quality has reached new heights, its wines some of the most sought-after in the Côte de Nuits.

In 2017 Marie-Christine 's daughter Lucie joined the domaine, and Marion and Fanny, daughters of Marie-Andrée are now also part of the team.
