Bolgheri's long, moderate growing season in 2019 yielded this beautifully balanced and layered blend of estate-grown merlot, cabernets franc and sauvignon, and syrah. Already appealing for its smooth texture, fresh thyme and lavender scents and crunchy purple fruit, this gains depth and intensity as it opens in the glass, suggesting it may be even better in a couple of years. Rating: 93 Wine & Spirits - wineandspiritsmagazine.com (Oct 2021)

Attractive perfumes of currants, berries, incense and flowers follow through to a medium body with firm, silky tannins and a bright finish. Some smoke and dark-earth undertones. A little tight at the end, but delicious already. Drink or hold. Rating: 93 James Suckling, www.jamessuckling.com (Jul 2021)

Bright blackberry, black currant and cedar flavors run into resinous oak and vanilla notes in this dense red. The core of ripe fruit lingers despite muscular tannins adding grip. Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc and Syrah. Best from 2024 through 2035. (VALUE PICK OF THE WEEK 16/06/2021) Drinking range: 2024 - 2035 Rating: 93 Bruce Sanderson, The Wine Spectator (Jun 2021)

Le Macchiole

Initially put onto the wine map by Eugenio Campolmi in 1983, the Le Macchiole estate has been run by his wife Cinzia since 2002. In the heart of Bolgheri, with 22 hectares of vineyard over much of the best soils of the region these are, along with the Sassicaia and Ornellaia's vineyards, also among the oldest and most established vines in Bolgheri. Their careful selection of grape varieties and cultivation techniques according to climate and soil has led them to concentrate on Merlot, Syrah and most importantly Cabernet Franc, a variety which can express itself so well in the hands of Le Macchiole.

All of their wines are marked by a unique and unmistakable character. Full bodied wines, and yet with clean and elegant flavours, leading to great freshness and finesse, they are incredibly sought after world-wide. The estate has been organic since 2002, and they are experimenting with biodynamics.
