A generous red from this appellation with plenty of intense ripe fruit. Chocolate and walnut undertones, too. It’s medium-to full-bodied with ripe tannins and a poised, polished finish. Serious new wine for me from this appellation. Rating: 92-93 James Suckling, www.jamessuckling.com (Jun 2020)

Very deep purple-black colored, the 2019 Clos Puy Arnaud charges out of the gate with bold scents of baked plums, boysenberries and preserved cherries with nuances of smoked meat, tar and cracked black pepper. Full-bodied, the palate is ripe, rich and decadently fruited. Framed by plush tannins and loads of freshness, it finishes on a spicy note. Always a benchmark wine for me in terms of success of a vintage, and this is promising from the start, with silky, inky purple depths to the colour, clear ease of extraction. Pulses of black cherry on the attack, this is sleek without sacrificing a sense of energy and uplift. Extremely good quality, you're going to want to get on board.
