Interestingly, here the nose resembles a grand cru Chablis with its oyster shell, iodine, quinine, lemon-lime and bee’s wax-scented nose. There is outstanding volume and concentration to the overtly powerful and muscular flavors that are supported by a citrus-tinged and markedly firm acid spine that also shapes the cuts-like-a-knife finale. As the length of my initial projected drinking window suggests, it would be pointless to open this beauty before it has at least a decade of aging as it should easily repay two of them. Notes of orange oil, pear, peach, yellow apples, fresh bread and nutmeg introduce Boillot's 2019 Montrachet Grand Cru, a full-bodied, satiny and concentrated wine that's textural and enveloping, with an ample core of fruit, lively acids and a long, expansive finish. Mid yellow with a light green tint. Much fuller, but not too fleshy, with a slight banana note to the fruit. Powerful broad stuff, a bit of barrel toast, this may be a sleeping giant, but it does not seem to have quite the precision of the others at the moment. A little bit heavier too in style too. Domaine Henri Boillot
A domaine which dates to 1885, but which began properly in the early years of the 20th century under the current Henri's grandfather (also Henri). His son, Jean, was the one who really developed it. Henri arrived in 1975 and worked his way up, becoming the winemaker. In 2000 he began the building of the new winery at the bottom of Meursault, and he then bought out his brother and sister to keep the domaine as one, renaming it from 'Domaine Jean Boillot' to 'Domaine Henri Boillot' to avoid confusion with his brother Jean-Marc's domaine.
The Domaine totals around 14 hectares, with roughly equal surfaces of red and white, and of which just under 4ha is the Monopole vineyard of Clos de la Mouchère, a walled enclave within the premier Cru Puligny Perrières. The 2017 vintage saw the arrival of two new parcels of Grand Cru red, in Échezeaux and Latricières Chambertin
