QUINTA DA ROMANEIRA

2019 Vintage Port

Grapes Touriga Nacional, Sousão
Origin Portugal, Port
District Vintage Port
ABV 13.5%

The 2019 Quinta da Romaneira has a very sensual bouquet with black plum, clove, Xmas cake and liquorice scents that give the olfactory senses a big hug. The palate is medium-bodied with quite a tangy/spicy opening salvo of cracked black pepper, tobacco, black fruits and subtle tertiary notes. This is a slightly more introverted single quinta Port on the palate than the nose, but I appreciate its length and the residual allspice and 5-spice aftertaste. It constitutes one of the vintage's more cerebral offerings. Drinking range: 2030 - 2060 Rating: 93 Neal Martin, www.vinous.com (Jun 2021)

I am very happy to be able to declare our Quinta da Romaneira 2019 Vintage Port.

The final blend, at 700 cases, represents a very small proportion of the total production of our 86 hectare vineyard, and around 14% of our total Port production. The varietals are Touriga Nacional (70%); Touriga Francesa (27%) and Sousão (3%). As always, the Vintage Port from Romaneira has a strong distinct personality, with fine aromatics of wild flowers and spices, expressing the unique character of this gr eat historic Douro vineyard. Elegant, structured and concentrated, there is a lovely purity of fruit, and a seductive charm that is typical of Romaneira Vintage Ports.

Although Romaneira is perhaps best known today for its range of unfortified Douro red wines, which represent the majority of our production, we are dedicated to the idea of producing a small quantity of extremely high quality Vintage Port whenever possible. This wine represents both a continuation of the centuries old story of Quinta da Romaneira, and also an important milestone in the renaissance of the vineyard’s reputation since our acquisition in 2004.

The weather conditions in 2019 were dry and sunny, with almost no rain from may to the end of August. However, in spite of the prolonged fine and sunny weather, average temperatures were in fact a little cooler than usual, meaning that the vines were able to bear the absence of rain.

The grapes were beautifully healthy, with very little disease pressure throughout the growing season. Harvesting conditions w ere ideal, with moderate temperatures and overall dry weather. A small amount of helpful rain fell on September 21st /22nd and later on October 14th. It was a long harvest, beginning mid August for white wines and our first red wines. We harvested the grapes for our Port wines at Romaneira in the first nine days of October. We had perfect conditions, enabling us to choose the right moment for each parcel, enabling us to pick and vinify with great precision.

Winemaker's notes (Apr 2021)

Quinta da Romaneira

Whilst an old estate with a consequentially long history, Quinta da Romaneira only really becomes of note when, in 2004, new purchasers of the estate placed it under the management of Christian Seely and Antonio Agrellos who had worked such wonders at Quinta do Noval. Since then the vineyards have been overhauled, the best old vines have been retained in tandem with a replanting programme for the rest of the vineyard. A brand new winery has been constructed, two-thirds of it underground allowing Romaneira to have a proper cool wine cellar in the heart of the Douro valley.

85ha of vineyard, stretching some 3km along the River Douro are planted with both traditional Douro grapes and some plantings of international varieties.

Of course, this being the Douro valley, Quinta da Romaneira produce some very high quality Ports, but the forward focus of the estate is to realise the potential for table wine. In the words of Christian Seely, "our challenge has been, and remains, to find ways to vinify unfortified wines from the Douro that can take their rightful place among the great wines of the world, alongside the other great classic regions such as Bordeaux, Burgundy or the Rhone Valley."
