15% whole bunch. As usual there's a vibrant tautness to this wine - energy and spice. Needs time! Lots of volume, salinity running through. Fruit flavour slow to develop in the mouth, but by the finish it is roaring its concentrated character. A very gourmand, rounded, slightly spicy fruit with very ripe redcurrant - 'the kind of fruit we can find in the Chambolle' remarks Marie-Andree. Drinking range: 2035 - 2050 L&S (Oct 2020)

(from 55+ year old vines). Moderately generous wood frames the distinctly earthy and sauvage-inflected aromas of spicy dark berry fruit liqueur, truffle and a whiff of forest floor. The delicious velvet textured middle weight plus flavors flash plenty of minerality on the focused, intense, youthfully austere and tautly muscular finish that is even more complex and more structured as well. Patience required if you wish to see this lovely effort at its peak. Drinking range: 2034 - Rating: 92-95 Allen Meadows, www.Burghound.com (Jan 2021)

One of the more reserved, introverted wines on the day of my visit was the 2019 Ruchottes-Chambertin Grand Cru, a serious cuvée that unwinds in the glass to reveal notes of cassis and raspberries mingled with sweet soil tones, blood orange, cinnamon and incense. Full-bodied, layered and lively, it's concentrated and tightly wound, with lively acids, youthfully chalky tannins and a long, penetrating finish. Rating: 95-97 William Kelley, The Wine Advocate (Jan 2021)

The 2019 Ruchottes-Chambertin Grand Cru includes 15% whole cluster fruit this year. This was very tight, almost surly on the nose following on from the Echézeaux, wet limestone suffusing the dark berry fruit. The palate is medium-bodied with filigreed tannins. There is an electric line of acidity here, and superb mineralité and symmetry toward a persistent finish that lingers long in the mouth. Very sweet, almost candied on the aftertaste. Just bloomin’ gorgeous. Drinking range: 2024 - 2048 Rating: 96-98 Neal Martin, www.vinous.com (Dec 2020)

Domaine Georges Mugneret-Gibourg

Domaine Mugneret-Gibourg was founded in 1933 on the marriage of Jeanne Gibourg and André Mugneret. Holdings then consisted of Bourgogne, village Nuits, village Vosne and Echezeaux. Their son Georges, an opthalmologist by day, added to the vineyards, but his acquisitions (Nuits 1ers Crus Vignes Rondes and Chaignots, Chambolle 1er Cru Feusselottes, and Grands Crus Clos Vougeot and Ruchottes Chambertin) were kept separate as Domaine Georges Mugneret.

On Georges' death in 1988, his widow Jacqueline and daughter Marie-Christine took over. Marie-Andrée, the younger daughter joined them a little later having completed her studies as an oenologist. In 2009 Jacqueline retired and the two domaine names were put together to become Domaine Georges Mugneret-Gibourg, ending the prior confusion of labels.

The sisters have proved more than safe hands as far as the winemaking is concerned, and these are top-flight Burgundies with that elusive balance of enough concentration allied with delicacy of expression and the capability to age well. All the vineyard management has been brought in-house (the domaine previously relied on two métayeurs for part of the vineyard) and the quality has reached new heights, its wines some of the most sought-after in the Côte de Nuits.

In 2017 Marie-Christine 's daughter Lucie joined the domaine, and Marion and Fanny, daughters of Marie-Andrée are now also part of the team.
