Dark crimson to purple. A little reductive note, perhaps more an oak torrefaction. Some people also find this coffee note in parts of Chambolle. Plenty of acidity which melds well with the fruit. An interesting Chambolle with considerable depth. Drink from 2026-2035. Tasted: September 2024. Drinking range: 2026 - 2035 Rating: **** Jasper Morris - Inside Burgundy (Oct 2024)

The 2020 Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru shoots well above the bottle I tasted in March 2022. This has a little more reduction on the nose compared to its peers, with dark cherries, violets and a subtle oyster shell element that manifests with aeration, perhaps even cola too. It gains a little delineation with time in the glass. The palate is very smooth and focused, with an almost satin-like texture and some high-quality oak. But there is some lovely fruit here. It's very pure, with white pepper-tinged black cherries and blueberry towards the finish. Very long on the aftertaste. Tasted blind at the Burgfest tasting. Drinking range: 2027 - 2048 Rating: 94 Neal Martin, www.vinous.com (Sept 2024)

The fragrant sour-cherry and floral nose pulls you into this refined and elegant Chambolle-Musigny that has a serious tannin structure, but an excellent, velvety texture, flowing gracefully over the palate. Very long finish with so much energy. A blend of 6 premier cru sites, mostly from estate vineyards. Drink or hold. Rating: 94 James Suckling, www.jamessuckling.com (Jul 2022)

The 2020 Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru, a blend of several parcels, has a tightly-wound bouquet with blackberry, bilberry and a light oyster shell scent. The palate is medium-bodied with fine but quite firm tannins that frame the blackberry and raspberry fruit, saline towards the almost Morey-like finish. Very fine. Drinking range: 2025 - 2045 Rating: 91 Neal Martin, www.vinous.com (May 2022)

Domaine Joseph Drouhin

Joseph Drouhin, founded in 1880 and still family owned, are one of the most well-respected names in Burgundy, especially through their flagship wine, the iconic Clos des Mouches.

A huge part of the Drouhin production comes from their own domaine fruit (78 hectares), and much of the rest comes from contracts such as that with the Marquis de Laguiche, who shook hands with the grandfather of the current generation, agreeing to let him manage his vineyards which included an important part of Le Montrachet; this collaboration endures. Today, the fourth generation is at the helm

Small refinements continue to be made here. The presses have been changed - a reversion to basket pressing for the reds, and for whites the presses are open - along with a number of other growers they are following the trend to think that slight oxidation of the juice before fermentation is not a problem and may add complexity as well as avoiding later problems of premature oxidation in bottle.

For the reds there has been the introduction of selective whole-bunch fermentation in the C么te de Nuits wines. The house style remains one that 'emphasises the natural elegance of great Burgundies' as they describe it. The domaine is all cultivated with an organic and biodynamic approach.
