The 2020 Angélus was given 30–40 minutes to open. It has a very intense nose of multilayered blackberry, blueberry and wild strawberry scents, crushed violet and hints of iodine. It is quintessential Angélus in many ways, sleek and smooth, harmonious and seductive. Those qualities also come through on the palate. This is framed by fine tannins, the Cabernet components coming through strongly on the midpalate. Quite ferrous in some ways, allspice and subtle minty notes lending complexity toward the finish. It is not quite as persistent as the recently tasted 2018 from bottle, but it comes across a little more chiseled and intellectual. Drinking range: 2027 - 2055 Rating: 95-97 L&S (May 2021)

Market Insight: We'd really like to see a bit of a correction here to offer real value. With the superb 2016 currently trading at £1,250 it's hard to find value in the new releases. Angelus are somewhat victims of previous success and fair pricing. L&S (May 2021)

Blackberry and plum character with chocolate, too. Oyster shell. Full and very firm with a linear sensibility. Tight and powerful. Very pure fruit. Tension and energy there. Polished tannins. Some coffee bean and chocolate. Give this at least five or six years. 60% merlot and 40% cabernet franc. Try after 2028. Rating: 100 James Suckling, www.jamessuckling.com (May 2023)

This is a vintage at Angélus that grips on from the first moment and expands through the palate, inching open and building layers of concentrated and ripe autumnal fruits of fig and blackberry, with crayon, slate, cocoa bean, chocolate cake, orange zest, smoked caramel. The floral expression of the Cabernet Franc comes in with white pepper spice, gorgeous depth of flavour. Plenty of Angélus exuberance if you give it time, with fresh acidities that lift off towards the finish. There is a tiny slice of Petit Verdot in this wine, but such a small amount that it isn't recorded as part of the blend. Ageing in a mix of oak barrels and larger oak casks,100% new oak. This is the first vintage without Premier Grand Cru Classé A on the label, after they withdrew from the classification. Drinking range: 2027 - 2046 Rating: 97 Jane Anson, Decanter (Feb 2023)

Château Angélus

The name Angélus supposedly derives from that of a particular vineyard where devout winemakers could hear the Angélus bell tolling from all the town’s churches.

The estate was brought by the present owner’s great-grandfather, Comte Maurice de Boüard, in 1921. He also owned another property Château Mazerat, and after World War II his sons united the two estates under its present name.

The next generation took over in the form of the dynamic Hubert de Boüard, a graduate oenologist from Bordeaux university, in 1985. Hubert felt that the Château was underperforming, and he has worked hard since to re-energise the property, aided by his cousin Jean-Bernard Grenié. Their commitment and investment was rewarded in 1996, when the Château was promoted to a Premier Grand Cru Classé.

Hubert's daughter, Stéphanie de Boüard-Rivoal, joined the team in 2012, and his nephew, Thierry Grenié de Boüard in 2016. Together they represent the eighth generation of the family to run Angélus.
