Blueberry, sweet cherry, blackberry fruit, bold and aromatic with good density. In the mouth there is a pure blackberry, cherry fruit profile, sleek and richly adorned with mocha and coffee notes, rich and satisfying with a lifted green tinged perfumed note. L&S (Sept 2024)

Cabernet Franc. A small percentage of amphorae introduced in this vintage for the first time, for freshness. Not as open on the nose as the 2019 but still clearly Cabernet Franc. This does have more tension and freshness, though less obvious herbaceous character. Firm, vibrant and needs a little more time. Drinking range: 2025 - 2031 Rating: 17 Julia Harding MW, www.JancisRobinson.com (Jul 2024)

The 2020 Paleo Rosso is classy, elegant and wonderfully polished. Crushed flowers, spice and blood orange lend brightness. Deceptive in its mid-weight structure, Paleo Rosso offers tons of depth. Historically it has aged quite well. I expect that will be the case here also, as the 2020 exudes balance from start to finish. The 2020 spent 18 months in 100% French oak, with 5% of the wine aged in amphora. Drinking range: 2027 - 2045 Rating: 97 Antonio Galloni, www.vinous.com (Aug 2023)

One of Italy's best Cabernet Francs, the Le Macchiole 2020 Paleo is very dense and richly concentrated with a level of dark fruit that can only be chipped at and broken down by slow cellar aging. Paleo is always a wine for the long haul. The oak needs time to integrate and find focus. Even at this young stage, the quality of the tannins and the spot-on fruit ripeness is convincing. A note of sweet cherry, exotic spice and dark chocolate make for a long send-off. Drinking range: 2025 - 2048 Rating: 96 Monica Larner, The Wine Advocate (www.robertparker.com) (May 2023)

Le Macchiole

Initially put onto the wine map by Eugenio Campolmi in 1983, the Le Macchiole estate has been run by his wife Cinzia since 2002. In the heart of Bolgheri, with 22 hectares of vineyard over much of the best soils of the region these are, along with the Sassicaia and Ornellaia's vineyards, also among the oldest and most established vines in Bolgheri. Their careful selection of grape varieties and cultivation techniques according to climate and soil has led them to concentrate on Merlot, Syrah and most importantly Cabernet Franc, a variety which can express itself so well in the hands of Le Macchiole.

All of their wines are marked by a unique and unmistakable character. Full bodied wines, and yet with clean and elegant flavours, leading to great freshness and finesse, they are incredibly sought after world-wide. The estate has been organic since 2002, and they are experimenting with biodynamics.
